Stalling for time before coming into work this morning, I took Andy Weir's 'Artemis' to the shitter to start reading it.
I didn't even finish the first page before thinking "this is going to be total shit, isn't it?" and closing it.
I never read The Martian, but knew enough about it to think it'd be a bit dull and perhaps borderline somewhere on the spectrum in its.. well, totality.
Is it worth bothering with?
- The Martian is great and well worth a read (it's relatively short), even if you've already seen the movie. But Artemis was crap -- definitely don't bother.ridg0026
- haha, that seems like a fairly ringing unendorsement!Nairn
- The Martian is great, Artemis felt written for the screen and will possibly make a better film than book.spl33nidoru
- But Artemis was only his 2nd book, with the pressure of following a bookseller debut. Andy Weir definitely has more great stories in him.spl33nidoru

The BNW remake seems to have completely missed the point of the book, and ending with a literal mystery box doesn't bode well for the second season now that they exhausted the book material.

Trailer for my sci-fi book "Thorns of Immortality" is finally out. I'm super excited. Writing it took way longer than I anticipated and in many ways helped me dealing with my mid-life crisis:
You can find more info here: http://thornsofimmortality.com/
- Should've drawn the title text too as that stands out and looks a bit bleh by comparison.
But fuck me, that's some cool shit.Nairn - Thx man!pr2
- Repost it when the book is out, I'm not going to rememberdrgs
- man, the 4+ people who dv'd this... really?Nairn

- Looking good.cannonball1978
- With some little movements in After Effects and particles it would look really nice.
So many good drawings in there. Looks cinematic.PhanLo - Phan, i was thinking of doing just that too but i'm torned because at some point the image become too "cool" with movement.pr2
- BTW, cannonball, since you actually publish your writing, do you mind if i reach out to you with some questions? I can't find your email though (mine is the webpr2

Hey cannonball - I finally started reading The Three Body Problem the other day and see what you mean about 'poor writing'! I'm not sure if it's a translation thing or perhaps it was his first book - or both - but a lot of it is incredibly clumsy. Dialogue and exposition is almost pulp fiction in parts.
That said, I barely had three hours sleep last night reading it, so should be finished soon and can get started back on Dark Forest and compare - that edition is translated by what sounds like an Anglophone*, so I'll see if there's much difference.
It's a completely different book to what I was expecting - although I'm not sure what I WAS expecting. Some of it's brilliant (hence the poor night's sleep...)
* I'm probably being racist now - translator of TTBP has a Chinese moniker. He could well be third generation American.
- I was going to say last time I mentioned this - some of the best sci-fi has terrible dialogue and characterisation - Niven, Simmons & Clarke spring to mindNairn
- Its true, good writing is not always the hallmark of good Scifi. Tree Body Problem is a fantastic story, I just had issues with the delivery.cannonball1978
