Don't you get sick of your tattoos, just like a desktop wallpaper that's been staring at you for months or some old clothes that are a decade out of fashion? It's always puzzled me, unless you're in the Yakuza or Russian mob.

I have a lot of tattoos, first I would ask your tattooer, because different inks and tattooing styles heal differently.
I am being tattooed with the tebori style which uses sumi ink which heals totally differently than other inks, and some inks such as white will heal for a very long time and need more afftercare.
What I find works for me is after I remove my bandage I wash my tattoo with cetaphil or other very mild soap, then I keep neosporin on it. I apply it very liberally for the first few days then I switch to Aveeno. Everyday I moisturize with aveeno and the times that my arms are exposed to the sun ( t-shirt or whatever ) I use sunscreen that I got from my dermatologist ( just takes a referral from your GP and it's as cheap as regular sunscreen )
My left sleeve is 6 years old and looks brand new. Take care of it and it'll take care of you. Enjoy your ink!

Keep in mind that the quality of the work and depth of penetration will determine the work's longevity - six plus years now for my oldest stuff and no blow outs, fades detected. All ten needle work and I took extra precautions post completion (I'm diabetic so I heal a lot slower); keep clean with mild simple products and do not be afraid to use a cream like Neo/Poly-sporin for the first few days to prevent infection.
After that just be smart - your money, your skin.
One last thought - you are going for a typically highly visible location - make sure it is something love ones' can tolerate and enjoy.
Good luck!

You don't get sick of your tattoo, you hardly notice it after a while, it becomes very much a part of your outward appearance, like your nose and your hands, as the wearer you barely perceive it. Allot like a wife.
