... for an article i'm writing on branding for freelancers.
There doesn't seem to be many that have great logos. It's almost an afterthought.

"great" is subjective. beauty, eye, beholder, etc.

Good point albums... i'm looking for freelancers that have a logo you think is effective as a logo for a freelancer ...

hmm, effective logos in freelancing sounds impossibru. I mean, I'm not selected by my own logo(s), but my name & body of work. My logo doesn't appear on products or buildings to draw people in. It seems to me... if the logo on the site matches the card, then I'm at the right site is about all a personal logo will ever represent to people from the outside.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. But some choose to present their names in a really smart way. Or they might have a play on their name like this guy:

I think part of the reason you don't see many is because for an individual it's not really that necessary, or it feels like overkill. To me, a logo implies an establishment, not a person. A freelancer's product is themselves, so it makes sense that their name represents them, not something abstract like a new name or mark.

hard to do your own logo, times an issue and without the boundaries that a client can bring it's hard to get something down and judge it. I concentrate on the brand. I want a working experience that is a bit of fun. So I do all my communication so I creatively play and hopefully create an 'oh that's cool moment. Don't always make it but having that thought makes it easier to do something.

it depends on what you do.. and how you do it..
i am a freelancer, but i am also an artist, sticker producer etc..and granted my logo is an appropriation of another logo, its still my logo..
its definitely not an afterthought with me, whenever i redesign my logo it tends to lend itself to my entire creative image and output..

- the head is big with this onefadein11
- AUT
064monospaced - this is not only a bit confusing, it says nothing about youmonospaced
- does it have to say anything about me?autoflavour
- AUTO64..autoflavour
- do logos have to say things about their owners? apple logo is an apple, yet they sell computersautoflavour
- as for big headedness.. i like appropriation..autoflavour
- I FUKN LOVE THIS LOGO!
Miguex - it's just a little weird because you surely don't introduce yourself as AUTO64.monospaced
- I like the mark, I just think it's odd to represent yourself with an abstract name and 3 numbers.monospaced
- that could be said for the majority of musicians, artists and creatives using a Nom de Plumeautoflavour
- "hi.. im banksy".. "hi im skrillex"
i dont think so..autoflavour - btw thanks Miguex..autoflavour
- also AUTO64 basically covers everything i do.. from VJing in a club, to clip production, to Djing, to stickers..autoflavour
- when it comes to work, its just my company name..autoflavour
- but if im on a flyer for a show, its AUTO64... and when i can, the logo tooautoflavour
- cool. I guess it needs a good amount of explaining. I do like it, btwmonospaced
- but does it really need explaining? think of any logo .. its not so much what it is but what people associate with it..autoflavour
- for me, people who get that its a rip on the ban dai logo is the best part, as they see where its coming fromautoflavour
- also, i love giant robots.. and japan.. and the whole early 90's rave aesthetic of appropriation of logosautoflavour
- all good mono.. i guess part of it all is also just graffiti mentality.. you need to have a tag .. something people know you by when they dont know youautoflavour
- when they dont actually know youautoflavour

i hire quite a few freelancers -
from my association, there are 2 kinds.the ones that freelance full-time usually have great logos and well thought out self promotion propaganda.
the ones that have full time jobs, and are just moonlighting for extra work often have poorly designed logos (or average, at least)
not always true- but often is, in my experience.

miguex has some excellent self promo work along with his logo
I guess it's not only the logo that makes the branding.

it depends though really what it is you are doing..
for me a logo has always been more like a brand for whatever i am doing.. freelancing or not..even when i have normal job i try to ensure that i have something running on the side.. if only to keep my sanity ..
for me, its always been about having a visual identity which can be used when needed.. either in my own propaganda or on other peoples..

also, it kind of plays into the whole sticker culture thing.. logo, image or style.. something to put up..

i find it's because they generally lack what 'branding' means, and how their logo fits into it. a graphic designer's logo is almost supposed to be bad, maybe.
