To back up files - mostly images but old admin / work too, I use external drives, then once a year I burn about 15 DVDs of images and store them.
Are DVDs still the 'standard' or best way to back something up long term? I was told never to use external drives / pen drives as a long [years] term back up.
What do you all think? Cloud backup still isn't what it should be I think,

blurays are bettter than dvds for backups.
(bigger amount of data and they were designed for a longer shelf life than DVDs due to scratchproof coatings).but harddisks are better if stored right.
and best is the cloud, because if your house gets robbed or burns down, you still will have your data.
now which cloud you should rent, idk...I would wait for google drive, that is supposed to launch soon ( http://thenextweb.com/google/201… ), or dropbox, or a custom server.

1 lesson: never use cheap DVD's, they become transparant over the years :)

DVDs and Blu-ray aren't long term solutions. The drives to read your discs likely won't be around in 10-15 years.

Fuckit, I just have more HDs than I really need, with redundant copies on each.
Backing up my work files on DVD's would be a monumental expenditure of time and effort, so frankly I can't be fucked.
Multiple redundancy is key, I think. Having an off-site ultimate backup is probably a good idea too - my equivalent is to keep financial and super-important or current working files (ie. things that would rape fuck me if I lost them0 on a website somewhere.
If you have serious megaGb requirements, you'll invest in a dedicated backup solution that uses either Tape or some specialised multi-disc array.
I doubt you're quite at that level though, given the myriad questions you ask here.

At the end of each year, i buy 2 new external hd's, put everything on them from the year - seal them up and put one in storage (off site) and keep one at home.
also everything is backed up on local servers and 'working' hd's at the office.
early on, i was using only a single hd to keep everything on, it was smashed on accident and i lost it all. never again.
