There are tons of jobs. This world is sickened with problems, therefore a job is there. Making money and prospering from that job is another question.

The honest art schools that told their students these expensive degree progammes are more for personal enrichment (and wouldn't get their grads any closer to a job upon completion), all went out of business long ago. Thus, you're left with the dishonest schools that claim they can make anyone into a successful artist.

should have went to heald or devry, there are tons and tons of radioshacks hiring right now.

i got fired a few years back and decided not to job hunt and started my studio. Three years on, we're swimming in work and our first full time employee starts with us next week. Considering college prepares you with the skill or at least the knowledge and realisation that you can create anything you want, you should consider creating your own job.

- fired or laid off? if the former - what did you do?

i get requests from design companies 3-4 times a week asking me to recommend someone. there's no lack of jobs, but there is a lack of people with the ability.
- Wow, that's a lot of recommendations. They must think highly of you! :)Hombre_Lobo
- it's also because i run a freelance service locally - so we get a lot of heat from that.bjladams

who told you that, was he teaching?...hmmm
Perhaps he was earning money with you.

@bjladams
Similarly, I also hear about great design jobs in the area, at least once a week. I agree with your statement that there aren't always people who fit the positions (ability).

There ARE tons of jobs. ARE. Not "There's".
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...
Ok. It's out of my system. I'm good.

@freshdude, there are seriously tons of jobs, though i get that it can be hard to break in. i get emails all the time from people looking for junior designers. if you want to chat more, send me your portfolio, and i'll see what i can do.
persistence is key, my man. if you commit yourself to being good, you'll get better and get a job. 100% of the people that i know who gave a shit and fought to get better got design jobs. your first job might not be your dream job, and you might have to work for free (internship) to start, but if you keep at it, something will come of it.
i don't know if this pertains to you, but a lot of students directly out of school only have print work in their portfolios. in this day and age, that's not going to help your cause at all, especially in larger cities. sure, there are some print-only jobs out there, and you may well land one, but i've seen very talented students really struggle with landing a job because of this.
- What about people who are good at web design but do not code? Is there worth in someone like that?CanHasQBN
- yes, but a week or two and a book about HTML/CSS can make you way more hireable.monNom
- technical innovation is going to come from someone familiar with the medium. most devs don't DO aesthetics, so the designer needs to fill in.monNom
- so the designer needs to fill in that part (technical innovation with an aesthetic goal, not purely functional)monNom
- yeah, i'm not saying that you need to be a developer and a designer... but you definitely need to be able...showpony
- to think about the medium from a technical standpoint. a lot of "web designers," for example, just design pages that look like print... no interactive thinking.showpony
- print pieces.showpony

They tell you this, just like with my 7 years of architecture never teaching much practical things, because it is a round-n-round cycle that keeps U's and teachers employed.
If everyone stopped "dreaming", they wouldn't have jobs for teachers and U's would lose billions in tuition.
It is good business (for them), to make everything look rosy and avoid details, like how to run a business, etc.
