thank you for your help.

Why not just go to the Adobe and Amazon site's and check for yourself?

- was wondering in terms of if buying from one place or the other makes buying upgrades easier or not as well.

1. pirated copy
2. get a copy from the company you work for.
3. get someone from adobe to buy one for you.
4. student discount.

Illustrator 5? damn, that is old school. I personally would find illustrator 9, much better before CS fucked it up
- maybe he meant Illustrator in CS5monospaced

I remember Illustrator 5. It was the first version you could use a gradient instead of using line blends to get the same effect. It also had built in spell check for the first time.

If you sign up to a short course at a local university and get yourself a student card you can buy an Education Copy.
That way you can get cheaper software and learn something new too.
New language / book-keeping / etc

I picked up CS5.5 design premium from a site called Evasoft for around £700 cheaper than Adobe, completely legit too. Illustrator is between £200 and £300 cheaper so might be worth checking out.
