The Spyder and Heuy are junk in comparison.

I'm sort of torn on it's necessity.
There are so many variables which affect color on screen... and your calibrators profiles won't exactly compensate for all of them.
If you're doing a lot of print work i'd say you'd be better off spending the money on pantone books.
If you're doing a lot of screen/web work... then just forget about color calibration. Just make sure you're always using a standard Adobe RGB profile and it should keep things relatively consistent

I'm in the same boat as d_rek... I've tried calibrators with mixed results. Lately I've been perfectly fine using the built in calibrator assistant on OSX to just set the native and target gamma, and setting the target white point to d50. Also don't forget to turn down your brightness!

Any best practices for using Adobe Creative Suite CC to keep colours consistent across the suite?
Is it best to use sRGB for all web work or is the higher gamut of Adobe RGB better?
Anybody out there who has their colour calibration down fancy uploading their settings?
- I prefer the North America Prepress 2, with Adober RGB (1998) and U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2monospaced

I've got the Spyder 3, and honestly, though it's always connected I can't remember when I last calibrated with it. Maybe I should do it more often.
- calibrated my retina mac and 23" cinema display definitely looking more real these days, and the gradients look better too.OctopiStimuli

i1 display Pro is fantastic - any better your price jumps into the thousands
- how does it compare to the Spyder and other brands? I want to get one, but not sure which brand.monospaced
- I think they are the best onesmugwart

Any good videos on calibrating for adobe or calibration in general you refer to?

Cheapskate tip: rent a high-end colour calibrator. You're likely going to use it less than once per year.

i have the spyder 3 express..
its great for a laptop, but its a bit of a fail once you have 2 screens, as you can only calibrate 1 at a time.. worse part is its just a limitation from the software, not the hardware.does make a difference tho.. especially when sending things to print..
- i should say anything where you have only 1 screen.. laptop, imac etc.. but yep, my video rig has 2 screens, one for playback and editing.. and i cant do bothautoflavour
- why can't you calibrate and then, 2 minutes later, calibrate the other?monospaced

...you have to tune your screen manually, but basically it's the same thing as what the spyders do.

- Excellent point, hadn't thought about that. Thanks.nb

for those who can't calibrate both multiple monitors(connected to the same computer) I wonder if it's the software.
I use ColourMonki Photo. And i have been calibrating more than one monitors. i thought it just creates separate profiles one for each monitors.ya spyder's crap.
go for Munki or i1- Yeah, we used Colormunki then upgraded to an i1 - what used to take 10 minutes now only takes 2. It makes unique profiles for each setup.face_melter

Maybe I'm not understanding, but how could a single calibrator calibrate two displays at once? It can only read one at a time, and since each display has different characteristics, there seems no point in attempting to use one calibration on another.
- What?nb
- auto said a shortcoming of his Spyder is that it can only calibrate one display at a time. How can any calibrator calibrate more than one at a time?monospaced
- pango mentioned having to use different profiles for each display, but that seems necessary since each display is differentmonospaced
- Oh, I see. Yeah, I thought you were suggesting that you need multiple calibrators for multiple monitors.nb
- Nah. Just trying to figure out why one model won't work on multiple displays. Seems like they all would work.monospaced
- make sure you name your new color profile for each monitor properly. include monitor name in the profile name.pango
- I don't even have a calibrator! What should I get? Will it work on an iMac where brightness adjust auto and contrast can't be changed at all?monospaced
- what kind of work you do on your monitor?pango

- As good as I thought I had my monitor after manually working on it countless times I was still never sure.monospaced

what are you guys crazy? of course not at the same time! :)
I've never ran into that problem yet. So I assume the reason you can't calibrate 2 monitors one computer was because the software couldn't detect or recognize the second monitor(driver)?
otherwise, yes you can calibrate 2 monitors, it creates separate color profiles for each monitor.
with OSX you can choose profile for each monitors in preference/display/colour
- Thank you.monospaced
- i friggin calibrated everything i have. lol. 3 monitors, 1 projector, 3 printers.pango

Calibrating your laptop monitor? Good luck.

Out of an office of 70+ people we calibrate 2 or three monitors (mine and my colleague's). The architects don't care - they all run with 100% brightness and 4% contrast and it drives me bananas, like looking at a lightbox.
We have an i1 which is sweet but the 3D/graphic bods now run with Eizo monitors with an integrated calibration unit - every 50 hours or so a small sensor slides from the bezel and does an update check. We also have 2 plotters, one of which is specifically for our picture work that has been calibrated for different types of paper. Works out pretty well overall.
Worst of the lot are the colour copiers - they print with a magenta cast to make the blacks blacker - thin lines on drawings show up better. Fucking architects. Trouble is it fucks with everything else, everything turns magenta if you don't manually adjust the ink balance beforehand and because we can't get a RIP for these copiers the settings can't be locked into the copiers themselves. Causes no end of crying and gurning, which is funny from people who can design an office block in Archicad but can't handle a few extra clicks in the printer software.
