    I'm sort of torn on it's necessity.

    There are so many variables which affect color on screen... and your calibrators profiles won't exactly compensate for all of them.

    If you're doing a lot of print work i'd say you'd be better off spending the money on pantone books.

    If you're doing a lot of screen/web work... then just forget about color calibration. Just make sure you're always using a standard Adobe RGB profile and it should keep things relatively consistent
