For most of human history everything was in CAPS. Lowercase letters developed as a byproduct of cursive writing.

Yeh, capitals signal to you that there's the end and start of sentences coming up and so you prepare and frame the current information ready for a meaningful break. They're a grammatical indicator and convey information. Mastery of English imbues prose with dense, multiple meaning - use fewer, more wisely and creatively chosen words and more efficient arrangements and devices to convey your purpose, not acres of awkward adolescent web-speak. Lern to fucken rite proper and you'll go a hell of a lot further in whatever you want to. Good English is like street smarts on paper that keeps your ass out of jail.

And who needs a grid system? Is typographical hierarchy really necessary? Why not use as many colors as there are crayons available?

If your job is communication, you should understand the importance of capitalization.

Very important. Like bored2death said, it's even more important in this area of work. Also, many people, including myself, judge others VERY harshly on the quality of their writing.

As an amateur linguist, I feel that if effective communication transpires, then grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. is a subjective matter.
Now, as a professional, I place great value in the use of proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. as a reflection of my work.
