http://library.thinkquest.org/46…THE BEATLES - 1) original member Stuart Sutcliffe came up with THE BEETLES , as a play on Buddy Holly's group THE CRICKETS who they loved. They were using the name THE QUARRYMEN and sometimes THE SILVER BEETLES - later it became THE BEATLES emphasizing the BEAT aspect of music (and poetry?). 2) Lennon lists the influence of the film "The Wild One", which featured a motorcycle gang called the Beetles (unconfirmed). John Lennon is generally credited with combining Beetles and Beat to come up with THE BEATLES spelling. Lennon was also fond of saying he had a vision as a child of a flaming pie in the sky that said "You are Beatles with an "A"

When Jimmy Page was assembling the group, Keith Moon (drummer from The Who) got word of his plans and predicted the group would go down "like a lead balloon" (this is a common English expression). Bassist and keyboardist John Entwistle thought it would be "more like a lead zeppelin." Page took the phrase and manager Peter Grant changed the spelling to "led" in order to avoid mispronunciation.

Steely Dan was named after a dildo in the William Burroughs novel 'Naked Lunch'. According to Burroughs, the first Steely Dan was a metal dildo that an evil German bulldyke prostitute crushed using her nether regions, and the second Steely Dan is still in use.

I remember hearing that KISS stood for Knights in Satan's Service. And later (and less importantly) that KORN stood for Kill Orientals, Ricans, and black folks. lol

Soundgarden were so called after founding member, Kim Thayil, heard an unusual sound in his garden.

Soundgarden's name actually came from an outdoor art instillation in Seattle...
NOAA's art collection includes six outdoor artworks by nationally recognized artists. Of special interest is the "Sound Garden," located atop a knoll near NOAA's boundary with Warren G. Magnuson Park. This installation features pipes that generate muted tones, with the pitch dependent on the direction and velocity of the wind. In all, the NOAA art collection pleases the eye, challenges the mind and enchants the ear.
- that's where Warren G got his name from, coincidently. His favourite Park.Fax_Benson
