I remember when Homework came out I had to drive to Gramaphone Records in Chicago to find a copy on vinyl (no CD version). Now they are this big pop band being advertised on SNL.

Sorry, there is no 'I remember when they were underground' argument w daft punk. Because their first album was SO BIG when it came out, that it just doesn't make sense to try to pull that off with them. I'm not saying is good or bad, I'm saying it's one of the few groups that were on a huge spotlight since their very first release.
We've all heard it, pretty much ALL of their tracks got constant radio play and mtv played their videos (back when they did that) all the time.

on the technical side, this is very debatable, because now a days people can call dubstep a track made by rihanna, skrillex or justin timberlake, but if you play them a track by coki, jkenzo or el-b they would most likely don't know what to call it

There was a brief moment before they became popular...I think the first two records were released on the British techno label Soma before they got signed a major. But you're right they made it big fast. But back then it was viewed as a niche audience whereas now they are basically one of the biggest pop bands (new album is already #2 on iTunes right below Justin Timberlake)
