Not spam, this popped up in my feeds this morning. Many of you guys ask about good point and shoots from time to time. $269 USD is insanely cheap, this thing normally goes for around $500.

Basically a rebranded Leica D-Lux.

SO TEMPTING!

I bought it. 46% off was way too good to pass up on something I've been drooling over all year. Merry Christmas to me!

It is not basically a Leica D-Lux. Side by side comparison, its quite different.

- Spend a bit more for Canon s100.2002
- is it really that much better?
doesnotexist - so much better. I tested, Leica Dlux5 vs Lumix LX5 vs S100. Leica on top but S100 right behind. LX5 was crap in comparison2002
- in comparison with those three.2002
- cancelling the lx getting the canon, sir.doesnotexist
- peer pressure!doesnotexist
- Consider other Panasonic cameras in that range. S100 is great but dont jump the gun !2002
- i'm sure they are, always love canon though don't know why i didn't consider itdoesnotexist

I am assuming that this slashing of prices mean LX6 is coming out shortly?
It is not normally $500 and most retailers are at $369.

This is what I usually do.
I order comparable cameras from Amazon. Test it with few shots and return the ones I dont want.
Leica is too expensive (comp to Panasonic GX1 or Nikon V1)
Panasonic GF3
Canon S100
Nikon J1

got the s95 today, so awesome! love manual mode—using the lens ring for aperture, and smaller dial for shutter speed. nice size too.
some of the more recent pics: http://paulhanger.tumblr.com
from what i've read the s100 is different only in zoom, full HD video, and the image size? i never zoom and hardly shoot video, and usually shoot pics in b&w.
- So why not go with the Ricoh GRD series? Known to be particularly good with BW shots.duckseason
- never heard of it, looks like poop, and have always trusted canon. and it's more $doesnotexist
- GRD 4 Just came out - could get a 3 for cheaper. Review here: http://www.stevehuff…duckseason

Nice stuff. You are right, in terms of using it as a general purpose camera, s95 is pretty much the same as s100.

Old lady had a $200 gift card for Amazon and decided to get this.

If you change your mind and bought it from Amazon, return and get the LX5

My LX5 should arrive today or tomorrow, but over the weekend I went over to a store that had both cameras out. I held both and played with their systems and interfaces. Overall I'm more than glad I got the LX5. While the Canon S95/100 is gorgeous in design, extremely minimal and compact, and has that cool lens ring control, these features are also its major drawbacks (for me). The Canon is so small it's too small; it's so tiny it's hard to get your hands on the controls without feeling like the camera gets lost in your hand, and it's slick too. The thing is smooth and has no bumps, so it could easily fall. The LX5, on the other hand, is a little bulkier, actually, a lot more. It's strong, with a right-side grip, substantial dials, a metal clip ring, a solid lens structure. Holding it feels natural, the shutter release is the size it is on a DSLR, not some tiny little button I struggle to find.
While I struggled between the LX5 and the S100, the LX5 wins for me. Image quality I imagine is similar, both have their ups and downs, but for actual use and build and design the LX5 is a pleasure to operate. I'm glad I made that choice. Enjoy your S95, man, I can't wait to hear about your happy experience with it.
- but the Lumix is small enough to toss into the bottom of my messenger bag without adding any real bulk, so it's still compactmonospaced
- it's still as compact as I need it to be. I'm so excited.monospaced

@mono
for sure, i can understand the too small aspect of the canon. i've been using my iphone for all my shots, so i don't mind it. and being able to have all these manual controls easily accesible is a plus for me.
took a ton of shots lastnight and on the commute this morning, will definitely slow my postings down now that i have to be home to upload & resize.

@doesnotexist
I think the arguments over which camera is better are now ridiculous. After actual use I now see that it comes down to that "feeling" one gets using them, and that's totally subjective. I use my iPhone but realize it's limitations far too often, and that's just a clumsy device too. I'm ready for the Lumix and like you, the ability to "have all these manual controls easily accessible" to me whenever I want. Cheers!
