My LX5 should arrive today or tomorrow, but over the weekend I went over to a store that had both cameras out. I held both and played with their systems and interfaces. Overall I'm more than glad I got the LX5. While the Canon S95/100 is gorgeous in design, extremely minimal and compact, and has that cool lens ring control, these features are also its major drawbacks (for me). The Canon is so small it's too small; it's so tiny it's hard to get your hands on the controls without feeling like the camera gets lost in your hand, and it's slick too. The thing is smooth and has no bumps, so it could easily fall. The LX5, on the other hand, is a little bulkier, actually, a lot more. It's strong, with a right-side grip, substantial dials, a metal clip ring, a solid lens structure. Holding it feels natural, the shutter release is the size it is on a DSLR, not some tiny little button I struggle to find.

While I struggled between the LX5 and the S100, the LX5 wins for me. Image quality I imagine is similar, both have their ups and downs, but for actual use and build and design the LX5 is a pleasure to operate. I'm glad I made that choice. Enjoy your S95, man, I can't wait to hear about your happy experience with it.

    • but the Lumix is small enough to toss into the bottom of my messenger bag without adding any real bulk, so it's still compactmonospaced
    • it's still as compact as I need it to be. I'm so excited.monospaced
