I was editing some 720 x 480 stuff on Premiere without issue on my machine:
Dell 4GB RAM
Intel D CPU 3.20GHz 3.19GHzI just brought in some footage that is 1920x1080 and Premiere can't play it smoothly.
Do I just need more RAM?
Or is it time to go Quad Core?

yea straight from a DSLR.
It's not my camera so I'm not sure about what compression they might have.I can work around this by working on AE and just using RAM previews, but that will be slow and painful.

you should wait premiere to create a playable proxy for it.
the file must be on your hard drive (hopefully a SATAII drive)
if you're creating a 4:3 project, why not convert the 16:9 full hd to 4:3 sd?also, you should not worry about playback actually, just scrub thru the video and make sure its ok and render.
otherwise, you should buy a multi core machine if you want to go to video-editing/motion design.

oh, straight from the HDSLR? so its a H264 file, it is compressed and it will not play smoothly.
you should work with a pc codec like Cineon, that will uncompress the file and it will be able to play smoothly.
but I have edited 7D files directly on premiere, without converting, but i got a six-core machine with 8gb or ram, and SATAII drives

right raw video files from cameras are not made for editing so you should convert them to a temp proxy file, could be anything really try a few different ones. Use these to edit then replace them when you render. There is an actual 'replace' function in premier.
- lower the bitrate for the new files. its a pain in the ass but really the only way to go, i've gone through this with .mts files from a cameraeieio

hmmm from what i know, the files straight from the camera are actually compressed, you should convert it to an uncompressed format and use it, no need to replace with the original files.
hes not using a red, or an ex camera, its a dslr.

whatever point is they should be converted. i always replace them with the originals then render out the sequence uncompressed.

fantastic.
thank you everyone for responding.
the CS5 upgrade looks like it's worth the $$$.will start looking into hardware upgrade as well.

I am selling my CS5.5 Upgrade.
I listed it on CL for $400, but I am willing to negotiate with anyone from QBN.I purchased the upgrade because I thought that my CS3 license was valid. Tried to install it and found out that my CS3 license was not valid, so the upgrade did not work. So I had to go ahead and purchase the complete version. I tried to return the upgrade but Amazon returned it because they do not take back software that has been opened.
San Diego area people only please. (Unless you don't mind driving to San Diego to pick it up)
Mssg me if interested.

so did you buy and install cs 5.5? did premier cs5.5 solve this then?
- yes, CS5.5 has the proper CODEC for the DSLR cameramonoblanco

Hey monoblanco.
NEVER edit directly from your harddrive this is not the way to do it.
1. Find out what codec is used in the files from the camera.
2. Transcode them if need be to something else prores 422 will be fine.
3. Put ALL of your footage onto AN EXTERNAL DRIVE which is at least firewire 400 and spins at 7200rpm.Working from your hard drive is not going to work on large files and complex projects because you are asking the computer to run the programs and access the data etc. all at the same time from the one disc. Using an external disk means the data comes from this and the program runs from the hard drive. Faster. Better. Works.
Cheers.

Also no need to upgrade by the way it won't do anything but cost you lots of money. The only thing you should buy is at least a firewire 400 drive at 7200 rpms.

Hello Chossy I already upgraded. After I watched this video that feel posted (link above) I decided that CS5.5 was worth the cost.
Since i upgraded I was able to play the video from the internal HD without a problem. You do make a good point about using external HD. I will invest on a new external HD in the future. Don't need it for now.
Thank you for your advice.
