The more iam listening the more I like. I switched from my iPhone+headphone to the big stereo sound system in the living room and cranked the volume to make the building shakes and I must admit that The Hunter reached another level at high volume. It just get from "good" album to "very good" album.

This album is still growing on me. The more I listen to it, the more I like it.
In terms of production value and sound quality I think this album harkens right back to blood mountain. The mix is excellent, guitars are heavy and chugging, percussion is crisp and explosive, and vocals are at least 'clean'.
I too was a little put off by the easier tempoed melodies that accompany almost all the tracks on this album. I was especially put off, as most of you were, by the vox. It's not that they're bad... it's that they're different. I'm used to a certain level of intensity when listening to Mastodon and I guess I feel the vox are missing that in this album. Again, they're not bad by any stretch... just different.
Anyway, I think hardcore fans will find something to enjoy here.

Definitely growing on me but the "Blasteroids" lyrics are horrible.

I'm a casual metal head/stoner rock fan but does this album seem like they're trying to be Queens of the Stone Age to anyone else?

I can see how it resembles some 80's rock influences, but it's *far* from Maiden or the center of 80's metal.... and really not close to the NWOBHM. So far the bits I've heard I enjoy, but not sure I'll buy it.

i like how their drummer doesn't need to have one of those super-mega-huge bass drum kit. He can do the same with a normal drum kit.

- He uses a double bass pedal by the way. You dont need double bass drums these days.CygnusZero4

^ Garbage standard issue metal drummer compared to Thomas Pridgen. He used to drum for Mars Volta, a prog band far more complex than Mastadon is. Pretty much has the best stick work out there right now.

Loving that illustration... though the type seems to clash... 2d v 3d... I dunno

Actually you can hear Pridgen drumming in Volta here. He is ridiculously good.

Mars Volta being compared to Mastodon? Christ... You're barking up the wrong tree, dude.
- Yeah, they arent corny 80s metal, but wasnt comparing them. Comparing drummers.CygnusZero4
- To what end?
d_rek - The only comparison you should be making is that one is white and one is black.d_rek
- Cygnus doesn't need a point. He just needs something to be contrary to. It is the essence of his existencelocustsloth
- Where you even alive in the 80's? There's nothing 80's about Mastodon at all.TheBlueOne

Check out the Today is the Day - In the eyes of God album... Brann plays drums on that and gets really crazy / prog-esque. Really good stuff.
