You'll get a yellow letter first from your ISP telling you that they received a complaint from some Movie or Music company and that you're IP address was tracked down. Your ISP will just warn you and will advise you to stop doing torrents and delete all illegal movies you have and if they catch you again they will give your info to the Movie/Music company.
- Finger point gun click. Happened to 3 of my friends using COX.DRIFTMONKEY
- and do you know what is the penalty?loool

How do the music/movie companies find out to begin with? How can they tell what you are specifically downloading and how can they prove it?
- They put out Fake current movies or music that will sniff your IP address.ok_not_ok
- In cahoots with ISP?DRIFTMONKEY
- Yeah but but most of the time the ISP's ignore the complaints specially for first timersok_not_ok

and my main question is what is then happening? does anyone know how much they fine you...money, jail, guillotine???
- I have personally never seen anything go beyond a warning letter.DRIFTMONKEY
- Yep...Usually the first letter will scare the shit out of you that it'll make you stop using torrents.ok_not_ok
- I think they are playing the fear factor big time. A few stories circulate of fines or being sued etc. and the warnings scare people.Dodecahedron
- some friends of mine have been fined. never heard of jail time.doesnotexist

- Do you use this? Can you endorse its legitimacy?DRIFTMONKEY
- It works for known IPs. Obviously not all IPs will be known but I use it and I've never had a letter from my ISPkalkal

I was always under the impression that these media companies were more interested in catching the big fish, the ones who are the source suppliers of all sorts of things like software, movies, music, etc ... you know, the major crackerz/ripperz, not necessarily the sole individual downloading a Metallica album.
Apparently not.
That said, I suppose the media companies would pursue the maximum penalty allowable by law wherever it is they're pressing charges. Whether it's a summary or indictable (fine or imprisonment, respectively) offence is up to whatever jurisdiction in which you live.

How is that even legal? Isn't the information obtained illegal (here violating privacy laws) not admitable in the courts?
- If I recall, the RIAA and MPAA won the right to request this information from ISPs a few years back in the US.Continuity

Actually – and someone in the US can correct me if I'm wrong – but didn't the Patriot Act have very wide-ranging provisions for obtaining personal details of users from ISPs? Or am I thinking of something separate that the RIAA and MPAA managed to score?

On the matter of Demonoid, you can see the message "Replacing faulty hw, we'll be back shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience"
By visiting their IP address rather than their URL
Thought it was just a problem on my end at first :P

I don't know what is with demonoid either...will it ever work properly

Install Common Sense 2010 XP and you should never have a problem.

I've gotten two such letters.
About a year or two ago I got a letter letting me know that the amount of data had gone well beyond what they observe as normal traffic and that if it continued they would cap my data usage.
Then a month ago I received the DMC notice from Comcast stating that the IP add. associated with my account had been reported as illegally uploading the files.
I've resolved to just buy the shit from now on. I always felt sort of shitty downloading stuff. It was more out of impatience for actual release than of cheapness.
- lol - i didn't even realize i had this screen name, or that i signed in with it...jtbuckwalter
