Very sad, the NDP isn't my party but he seemed like one of the good guys. Our country will miss him.

RIP Jack? I'm sorry but Jack is too large of a name to give this man a first name basis.

State funeral for Jack. For once, a very classy move on the part of Harper.
- He must be shitting his balls seeing how loved Jack is.i_monk
- Nah. He knows that when the mourning period is over, he can now carry on completely un-checked, because that's the kind of slime he is.Continuity
- ... kind of slime he is.Continuity
- Nah, unchecked because that's how our parliament works in a Majority.i_monk

From the letter Jack wrote shortly before his death:
Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world’s environment. We can restore our good name in the world. We can do all of these things because we finally have a party system at the national level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change. In the months and years to come, New Democrats will put a compelling new alternative to you. My colleagues in our party are an impressive, committed team. Give them a careful hearing; consider the alternatives; and consider that we can be a better, fairer, more equal country by working together. Don’t let them tell you it can’t be done.
My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

Porch Lights On for Jack Layton
Location: on your front step
Time: 9:00PM Monday, August 22ndhttps://www.facebook.com/event.p…
There is a vigil happening tonight on Parliament Hill but there are so many of us across the country (and world) who will not be able to attend. Tonight at 9, put your porch light on for Jack and keep in on all night. (If you don't have CFLs in your outdoor lights, change them out first- Jack was all about green!) Lets show everyone what a light he was in both public and private life!
P.S. I'd love people to share their photos of their lights on on the event wall. I will be doing an interview about this event on CBC Radio tonight.

I can't help but think that he knew how sick he was during the election, but campaigned anyways. His health declined so fast that it seems unlikely it was a surprise.
- It doesn't surprise me one bit. Cancer can fuck people up in no time at all. I've seen it first hand.Gucci
- A lot of people suspect he was campaigning that hard while knowing he was sick again.Jaline
- But it didn't hit him that badly until after.Jaline
- I'm with you on that on Gucci.lobstarr
- Yup, Gucci is 100% correct as well. Sounds like he may have had bone cancer after beating prostate cancer.Jaline
- His father actually beat prostate cancer. Must be horrendous to beat it and then have it again (as Jack did)Jaline

O well. He was an inspiring leader no doubt and it was awkward timing considering the election and all the gains he made for the NDP. Anyone who has no clue who he was and is interested in political issues should look him up but it should be taken with a grain of salt. He was just a politician, these people aren't everything they seem to be.
- ai, neither are anonymous internet personalities. Hall of mirrors innit?ThePublics
- hall of mirrors sometimes speaks the trutheieio

He was more than "just a politician." There are plenty of politicians. Layton stood above the pack as a great leader and a man of integrity.
- mmmeh... have some koolaid. I mean no disrespect but its besides the point.eieio
- your point is amateur cynicism, fit for an undergrad's facebook status, little else.ThePublics
- ok forget it theneieio

A friend of mine had an interesting comment about this, saying it means way more for the state of Canadian politics than anything. We have a problem with the current leadership and the official opposition has now been replaced with an insufficient and controversial separatist. Layton made a big mistake with choosing Turmel.
- Your friend must be some sort of veritable genius! Has he/she considered writing a book? Oh my, it would be amazing!nb
- whatever, he really is a smart dude. He actually said "this is not an NDP thing for me" then called Turmel a "Quebec sympathiser".eieio
- ... sympathiser"... BTW QBN could use bigger notes.eieio
- She's not really a separatist as I understand it but its all political posturing anyway.eieio
- Yeah man, sounds like he "really is a smart dude." Lulz.nb
- she's just standing in anyways, party will re-elect their leader.horton
- They'll probably elect a new person.Jaline
