My girlfriend needs to buy a new PC laptop.

With a brief as vague as that, I suspect not, so let's just go with the standard-expected response: “Buy her an iPad”.

It's not a brief. It's a simple question!

I think hes talking about your/her budget and what she will be using it for and how portable it needs to be... etc etc

the sony in this thread looks good. No idea whether it's appropriate for your gf.
- small keyboard though - no good if she's got pudgy, oversized fingersFax_Benson

Arh okay. It is for her work. She works as a Brandmanager at a fashion fair, so it is mostly for Microsoft Office, a little Photoshop and web-browsing. Price range is medium.

i recently bought my daughter an acer timeline 15.6" laptop for uni. £499 I think - couldn't be arsed to spend the extra on a macbook when all she needs is MS Office. Downloaded Chrome + iTunes and she's away! and I'm £500 better off

I've actually had great experiences with Dell.
Currently using a Dell E4310 (2.8GHz i5 version), with 8GB RAM, 60GBSSD + 500GB HybridSSD drive (swapped out optical drive for it) and the total cost was Just under £500.
It's a businessy laptop but it has a certain charm to it's appearance. 13" screen and pretty light.
If your budget is higher, I'd recommend the Z-Series Vaio's. Absolute beasts of machines.
With Dell, the only thing I'd avoid is their Inspiron range. Since the 1545 they've always been known to have problems in some form. My old 6400 still goes strong though. Go Latitude/Precision/Vostro
Never go HP. I've had such shitty experiences with them and pretty much everyone I know with an HP has had trouble with it.
- +1.... Like the studio ones, Latitude is junk-ware free too....
Inspiron = Perspired - Onvaxorcist - dang where did u get that price?Projectile

I get refurbished Dell laptops from Dell.... never had a problem that wasn't my own fault.. I punched the screen very hard after an all-night debugging session drove me insane once, luckily Dell laptop parts are all over ebay and I got a replacement screen for $74
- I agree - i've got an old dell i use for web testing - it cost £100 and works fine despite the lack of attention and care it receiveshans_glib

I used to have a dell latitude as back up computer and in the odd case of wanting to use a PC. It was bulletproof. I cannot tell how much violence, liquids, shocks and falls it survived, and as vaxorcist says, you can buy most of the components through ebay. It lasted like 5 years of loyal service until mugs got into my flat and left with it. Shame on them, Through the years I pretty much replaced and upgraded every single component for close to no money. Sometimes is good to have a shit laptop that you don't have to look after.

tbf, one of the toughest little laptops I've come across is shitty old Dell we have kicking around here, deep in the woodworking shop, where it gets covered in wood dust and detritus.
Laterally, I've become massively fed up having to service Dells over the years, some of which were clearly flawed by user error, but others of which were just very, very badly put together— and I'm talking the top of the line ones here.
On balance, I've come to hate Dell. Perhaps that's unfair.
