Has anyone on this board been to Cape Town?
Is it a safe city? Lots of things to do?
Any suggestions on where to stay?

I was there in April and had a great time. I felt pretty safe the whole time and found the people quite friendly. Go up to Table Top mountain (you can hike it or take a cable car). Rent a car and drive around the coast, stop off at Boulders Beach and lay out with the penguins. Cape Point is a good stop off and has some pretty dramatic views. There are also boat tours where they take you out to see the great whites jumping out of the water to catch seals, but your not guaranteed to see them and it takes up about half of a day. The wine country is really beautiful and there are some great restaurants in the wineries.

Yeah I went a couple years ago. Did Table Mountain, went to Stellenbosch, went out to bars and had no problems at all. Awesome people. I spent almost a week there and then drove up along the coast on the garden route to George making stops along the way. Had an amazing time, I highly reccomend it. Going for a week in October.
Any suggestions for museums, places to see animals, and other cultural places?

I'm also in Cape Town.
Definitely check out the National Museum and National gallery in the city. You can also check out the Iziko Museum, Company Gardens, Castle of Good Hope, Robben Island for various interesting cultural stuff.
Good info to be found here: http://www.capetown.travel/
Lots of independant art galleries in and around town, many of them within walking distance of each other. Quite a vibrant nightlife as well in and around Long Street, where you can also find pretty cheap, albeit simple accommodation.
Great place, loads to do and see :)

I'm from CT aswell (not a typo) Definitely worth getting a car... not much in the way of safe public transport except for cabs. Basically, in terms of safety, avoid trains (and minibus taxis at night), definitely don't follow a drug dealer down a dark alleyway, and you should be fine.
Check out Table Mountain for sure, what I like to do is take a hike from Newlands forest and walk round the mountiain into town.. and possibly even hike up to the top. But that's a full day mission, you don't have to commit to that- you can take the cable car if you're a fatty ;)
oh and speaking of which, careful smoking a fatty on Long Street, had a close call with cops last time I was there.
if you tell us what kinda thing you'd like to get up to we can suggest more stuff to do and see..

Just looking to see galleries and museums and a zoo if there is one.
I'm not going to rent a car, but if there's beautiful sights or natural phenomena to see within city limits, I'm very interested.

would get a car, drive round to boulders, have a swim look at the smelly penquins, continue to cape point and see the baboons and ostriches, have a swim at dias beach, carry on round and go over chapmans peak, have lunch/dinner at chapmans peak hotel (famous for calamari) go have sundowners on clifton and then head into town. there is a bird park (monkeys too in houtbay but its pretty rundown, and one of the monkeys bit me in february)
another day Id head out to franschoek and spend the day and even night there drinking wine etc, its a beautiful area.
you could head up the west coast too for a day, darling is a cool little town 50min from CT and then head to yzerfontein beach which is good
table mountain is a must too
get up early and climb lions head, its an easy climb and watch the sun come up, or if you are there during full moon there are parties up there then.
depending on where you are from, you probably have better galleries/museums there but the nature side of CT is amazing so id suggest going that route
great food and wine in beautiful surroundings and friendly people
