I was there in April and had a great time. I felt pretty safe the whole time and found the people quite friendly. Go up to Table Top mountain (you can hike it or take a cable car). Rent a car and drive around the coast, stop off at Boulders Beach and lay out with the penguins. Cape Point is a good stop off and has some pretty dramatic views. There are also boat tours where they take you out to see the great whites jumping out of the water to catch seals, but your not guaranteed to see them and it takes up about half of a day. The wine country is really beautiful and there are some great restaurants in the wineries.
