Knobbishness aside, it seems most people have missed the main thrust of the original article. Wasn't he talking primarily about how a different grid (and more consistent use of it) would help NYT.com? I'm not a huge fan of his admittedly hasty comp, but it does seem like he's getting called out for something he wasn't actually doing.

Design with headlines is very bad idea - you need at least a sentence or two from the article.
Design in traditional structure of top to bottom is bad idea too as it assumes one kind of point of view. While many people come to the news site for a variety of news and just because they don't care about about the main news they shouldn't necessary be penalized.
It's quite obvious he doesn't actually read NYT website.

@ TBO - I think it's absolutely essential to redefine the advertising model for news sites. The reason we all hate reading news nline is because of the information overload most news sites give you by cluttering the UI with garbage, ads, widgets, etc.
I don't agree designing like a blog is the way to go, but letting go of the current idea for news online is the step that'll save most of these papers from death and or the eventual Huffpo model of news.

Taking risks is what we're all good at. These industries need to step forward or be left behind. It sounds cliche, but it's a truth. I watched several months ago as 700 people were let go from my company. News has it rough, but these papers are primarily lead by people with limited ideas on how to steer forward into a digital future.
- most businesses r lead by people with limited ideaspr2
- and eventually those businesses die and are replaced by businesses with better solutions. case in point.zenmasterfoo
