@ TBO - I think it's absolutely essential to redefine the advertising model for news sites. The reason we all hate reading news nline is because of the information overload most news sites give you by cluttering the UI with garbage, ads, widgets, etc.
I don't agree designing like a blog is the way to go, but letting go of the current idea for news online is the step that'll save most of these papers from death and or the eventual Huffpo model of news.
