Design with headlines is very bad idea - you need at least a sentence or two from the article.
Design in traditional structure of top to bottom is bad idea too as it assumes one kind of point of view. While many people come to the news site for a variety of news and just because they don't care about about the main news they shouldn't necessary be penalized.
It's quite obvious he doesn't actually read NYT website.
