Headed to Maui on Sunday with the wife. Booked the vacation last minute, piggybacking on a wedding in San Diego..
Anyone been to Maui? Anything we should not miss? Food recos, bars, beaches, hikes?
you lucky biatch
WOOOW ! I somehow want to be your wife. lol
i believe the users buzzsaw and leftwave are in hawaii, may want to drop them a line
go to the crater and bring your camera, it looks like you are on mars
I have a friend there who does a show juggling chainsaws while riding a motorcycle stand up style, like a surf board, with a python around his neck and a midget skiing on rollerblades behind him.
Actually, he just does whale watching trips and stuff like that. I can get you his info if you'd like.
I really liked the road to Hana. There's various hiking and waterfall jump off points along the way. It's an all day thing and bring food. I totally regret not jumping off a few of the waterfalls I felt at the time were too high (yet everyone else landed safely). Bring bug spray. I got eaten alive hiking through a bamboo forest. Also if I were you I'd buy fins if you want to snorkel. Those rentals are fucking gross and my friend got the grossest foot fungus from those.
There's also this awesome little cove in Napili Bay where you can see and swim with sea turtles. When I went there I stayed right off that cove. There's a public type beach over at napili bay but if you're facing the beach go left around the rocks and there is the cove where the turtles are.
Also i went to the volcano top and we just drove up in a car (it's cold up there btw) but there were tours on 4 wheelers that looked totally cool. Next time I'm totally doing that.
Lahaina was pretty cool.
Road to Hana is busy as fuck and over touristy. It's cool but sooooooo many people.
Rent a Jeep.
Mama's Fish House, soooooo good. The best snorkeling is in Molokini crater and down south in la Perouse Bay next to the lava flows.
Lots of cheap eateries in Kihei, and just south of there in Wailea there's polo beach and big beach that are pretty awesome, less busy and lots of turtles/snorkeling... actually a lot of boat trips from the NW resorts go there =)
you must snorkel....
Nice, I'm headed to Oahu on Sunday with the wife. Qoob Pacific.
what part of maui? north, south, west, east?
Yes... Rent a Jeep as was mentioned above.
The Road to Hana can be a great day - or awful, depending on how many folks are on the road that day. Nice place to go for a day trip - I quite enjoyed it. And again, the volcano trip is cool (very cold at the top) as it looks like you're on the moon up there.
Also as mentioned - do not rent snorkel gear, buy or bring your own and go to a cove or lonely beach (like Honokowai Beach Park) where it's easy to get into the ocean and it's all free. You don't really need to go on an organzied trip (although I went out to Molokini Island and had a great time snokeling out there).
Also every evening, there is a free show (luau) at the
Ka'anapali Beach Hotel that is an interesting cultural experience that you won't find for free anywhere else on the island. Go early, get a table outside, order some food and drinks and watch an amazing sunset while listening to orginal Hawaiian music from a native family on the island. You can stroll up the beach walk and just park yourself on the hotel's property and enjoy the show. Quite fun and inexpensive.
The North coast highway around the top of the island (Hwy 30) is awesome. It gets freaky the farther you go, as the road narrows to a single lane and is at the edge of cliff with no guardrails. The scenery however is spectacular and very well worth the trip! There's also a major 'blow hole' up there that's a lot of fun. The rest is about kicking back and enjoying the island for what it is.
went to Maui for honeymoon in 2009... my eyes are still bouncing from left to right from all the turns on the Road to Hana...
We stayed at the Westin in Ka'anapali
looking forward to going back some day (soon)
If you buy snorkeling gear you'll end up with cheap crap you might want to check Maui Dive Shop in Kihei... it's pro gear and well maintained. I've no idea how the other people ended up with gross equipment, renting out of a van maybe? =)
Thought this thread said "Maul".
Was hoping to see some more pics of that Jaguar attack incident.
Headed to Maui in two weeks for 9 days with my wife! So excited, never been there before, and since we usually stay in a few different places for a trip that long, I'm excited we're staying in one place the whole time (in Wailea).
