Finally this is being noticed - nobody wants to play on this boring crap - I remember when slides were 10ft tall and we sat on wax paper to make us go faster.

i remember tight-rope walking fences for fun. I also remember almost losing a nut. But it was worth it.

Back in the 70s most of the playground equipment I played on had been there for over 20 years, and often included the devilish "Witches Hat"
Slides that were 25feet high, roundabouts and long seesaws and vertiginous swings with shiny plastic seats. All of these were set into asphalt. If you didn't hold on strongly enough, you would fall on the asphalt and it would hurt. A strong feedback mechanism that accelerated physical learning. I remember playing on the very same witches hat that smashed out my aunt's front teeth when she was 9. And she's fine now, apart from a poor memory and scoliosis.- you couldn't call it a witches hat these daysFax_Benson

in the piece: broward county has banned running in playgrounds... are they kidding me?
and don't even get me started on sports days. i grew up wanting to get that 1st place ribbon on sports day. and of course i didn't always get it. and i had to cope with the disappointment. now.... kids are all given blue ribbons so as not to damage their fragile little minds because somewhere along the line someone decided healthy competition is too traumatic for kids nowadays.
blows my mind.
- We teach our kid about how stupid all that is. She understands intuitively about good, better and best. I think it'smikotondria3
- something you have to teach out of kids, like racial or gay tolerance.mikotondria3
- I agree. Kinds need to learn failure, respect it, and figure how to avoid it.mg33
