Client has a Wordpress site running already. I need to update his layout/theme without the site being screwed up while its being worked on.
What would the best strategy be? He also wants to obviously have live links to preview.

^ This is how I do it.
On the Mac I use MAMP for local DB and Server

This is what I thought. But I need to be able to show him live links. Do I just do this on my server.
- bulletfactory0
external links will be live, but the site will only be as up to date as your local copy of the DB.

Yes, well sort of like that. Back it up no doubt, but you can easily install a new theme and you'll not loose your media nor your pages and posts if you do it correctly. If you have plug-ins being utilized in your widgets, you can easily push them over too. Unless, I am being a dumbass and assuming you don't already know this.

Dude, just create a subdomain or copy everything over to another folder. whatever.yourdomain.com

Can't you just upload your theme and preview it in the admin system?
- if you upload it, you are physically uploading a file, duh.jadrian_uk

I thought once you switch the theme it will go public.

Changing the domain of your WP installation can get tricky as WP doesn't have a single point to enter base url and it also hardcodes its full links in the database. I found the most reliable way to do this is to export the whole database, do a search and replace on the url and then import it into the new installation.
Sounds McGyver-ish, but hey, this is WordPress for you...

ahem, like so...
- set up oracle vm
- get ubuntu distro (32 bit)
- wget that shiz to a directory
- poo on yourself
- clean up
- forget where u were in terminal
- go to sleep

you can do subdomain or just create a new install directory (ex:mysite.com/tempwordpress)
install the theme you are modifying into the temp wordpress install , grab the export from the live site and import it then make the necessary changes to the theme. sending him links as needed, Once you are done zip up your new theme and upload it to the Live site

Lol @ wordpress.

All this duplicating of sites is unneccessary.
Just use a theme switch plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plug…
That way you (and the client) can view the site with the new theme, whilst everyone else visiting your site gets the current theme.

^ do that!

::BUMP::
I have flash on top of an image and want the flash to be transparent. Was wondering if anyone has done that in WP and if you have any easy workarounds. Thanks all!
- popfodders0
74LEO, I have had the same problem and still haven't found a fix, except it's not a Z-index issue, it exists with a drop-down menu falling under a flash embed on a page. fucking sucks
- jadrian_uk0
it's called localhost
- popfodders0
wait, why would you want to say 'fuck wordpress'. It's strong, just depends on how you use it and design around the framework with a theme. That's crap, it's a very good tool.
- bulletfactory0
@pofodders - in regards to your dropdown menu falling underneath the flash.... wmode="transparent" will fix your issue.
Use it in both in object and embed tags.
