You are being contacted on behalf of NBC Universal and its affiliates ("NBC Universal") because your Internet account was identified as having been used recently to illegally copy and/or distribute the copyrighted movies and/or television shows listed at the bottom of this letter. This notice provides you with the information you need in order to take immediate action that can prevent serious legal and other consequences. These actions include:
1. Stop downloading or uploading any film or TV shows owned or distributed by NBC Universal without authorization; and
2. Permanently delete from your computer(s) all unauthorized copies you may have already made of these movies and TV shows.
The illegal downloading and distribution of copyrighted works are serious offenses that carry with them the risk of substantial monetary damages and, in some cases, criminal prosecution.
Copyright infringement also violates your Internet Service Provider's terms of service and could lead to limitation or suspension of your Internet service.
An industry website, www.respectcopyrights.org, offers step-by-step instructions to ensure that your Internet account is not being used to violate the copyright laws. The site also can point you to an array of legal choices for enjoying movies and TV shows online. You can also learn there how movie theft damages our economy and costs thousands of Americans their jobs.
If, after visiting www.respectcopyrights.org you still have questions, or if you believe you have received this notice in error, you may contact NBC Universal by email at or by calling (818) 777-4876. Please cite the Reference ID noted at the top of this letter in the subject line of any email or voicemail you may leave. You should take immediate action to prevent your Internet account from being used for illegal activities. Today, there are many ways to enjoy movies and TV programs legally.
The undersigned has a good faith belief that use of the NBC Universal Property in the manner described herein is not authorized by NBC Universal, its agent or the law. The information contained in this notification is accurate. Under penalty of perjury, the undersigned is authorized to act on behalf of NBC Universal with respect to this matter.

The ISPs are spying on their customers and sharing private information under the pretence of copyright. They talk tough a lot. I'd like to know how they could prove or verify you in fact downloaded something they own the copyright to. Anybody could download a bogus torrent or file with virus or malware in it labelled "Family Guy", doesn't mean its actually Family Guy.

anybody know which (or all?) isps are cooperating?

What is really amazing to me is that they are unable to shut down the "scene" people who release all these bootlegs. You see the same names on movies year after year, so I assume it's the same people.

My coworker just got one these yesterday:
"This message is to advise that Cox Communications has received a notice claiming that you are using your Cox High Speed Internet
service to post or transmit material in violation of U.S. Copyright
law. We have included a copy of the complaint, which identifies the
party raising it and the material claimed to be infringing."- no fuckin' way. what happens now?scarabin
- do you get a cease and desist warning or do they immediately commence fucking you?scarabin
- This was from something he downloaded on demonoid, which I use religiously.DRIFTMONKEY
- It's a warning..just stop doing it. I got the same one a coupl of years ago.ok_not_ok
- i know people who get these 3 or 4 a month. The person I know doesn't give a shit. I think I'd lay low for a while.Gucci

I have digital phone along with internet through my ISP. A couple of years ago I was having some phone problems and contacted them to see what was going on, completely forgetting that I was downloading some episodes of The Wire. Talking to the service guy on the phone...
Service: "Excuse me, sir, but I see here that you are downloading some copyrighted material, The Wire [and lists the episodes]".
Me: "Oh, yeah, you see that, don't you..."
Service: "Yes sir. This is a warning. If we see this kind of activity again, we will contact the authorities"
Me: "Sure thing, no problem!" *Stops downloadingFUCK!
- the correct response would be to tell him to mind his own business and stop threatening their own customers.Dodecahedron

99% of this is psychological intimidation. They want you to think you could go to jail for downloading something, they want you to be afraid of sharing stuff online. You should look into the actual related laws and understand your rights because a back room deal between ISPs and copyright nazis does not change the laws nor does it give them all ability to skip over a proper legal process.
If they want to shut your service down leave them, there are other providers, and what if you went to another provider in on this shady deal? Will they share your previous information like a criminal record? Whether you know it or not you have a right to privacy, these companies don't want to mention that fact though.
