I have digital phone along with internet through my ISP. A couple of years ago I was having some phone problems and contacted them to see what was going on, completely forgetting that I was downloading some episodes of The Wire. Talking to the service guy on the phone...

Service: "Excuse me, sir, but I see here that you are downloading some copyrighted material, The Wire [and lists the episodes]".
Me: "Oh, yeah, you see that, don't you..."
Service: "Yes sir. This is a warning. If we see this kind of activity again, we will contact the authorities"
Me: "Sure thing, no problem!" *Stops downloading

    FUCK!

    • the correct response would be to tell him to mind his own business and stop threatening their own customers.Dodecahedron

99% of this is psychological intimidation. They want you to think you could go to jail for downloading something, they want you to be afraid of sharing stuff online. You should look into the actual related laws and understand your rights because a back room deal between ISPs and copyright nazis does not change the laws nor does it give them all ability to skip over a proper legal process.

If they want to shut your service down leave them, there are other providers, and what if you went to another provider in on this shady deal? Will they share your previous information like a criminal record? Whether you know it or not you have a right to privacy, these companies don't want to mention that fact though.

I got one of those cox communications notices. it wasn't even me. my sister used my wireless internet and downloaded a movie and was seeding it. total idiot.

  • Dodecahedron0

If he's really being sued he hasn't done anything illegal they are just picking and choosing their battles and trying to get away with. Obviously many millions of people download 'some movie' and don't get any warning let alone a law suit so he's being made an example of. They are throwing their weight around, he still has plenty of defence if he gets a good lawyer.

I...uh... I mean, a friend of mine downloads a lot of 70s and 80s films and has never received a notice.

  • Dodecahedron0

The ISPs are spying on their customers and sharing private information under the pretence of copyright. They talk tough a lot. I'd like to know how they could prove or verify you in fact downloaded something they own the copyright to. Anybody could download a bogus torrent or file with virus or malware in it labelled "Family Guy", doesn't mean its actually Family Guy.

  • ukit0

What is really amazing to me is that they are unable to shut down the "scene" people who release all these bootlegs. You see the same names on movies year after year, so I assume it's the same people.

  • johnny_wobble0

what about music? or is it just movies getting the attention?
