My router is dead all of a sudden?

I'm using my neighbor's wireless now.
Anyone ever had their router just not work? The adapter is plugged in, but no lights on the front are working. I turn it off and on and my computer too.
Can they just die one afternoon?

Absolutely they can 'just die'. Most brands are poorly made (Linksys in particular are SHITE), and heat in the unit over time makes them less and less reliable until they just stop working.
Bite the bullet and get a new one.

I feel I'm on borrowed time with my router. It's been a work horse since '04, but I've had to reset it a lot lately...
- And I just added nothing to this topic..tymeframe
- Lol! Very honest! I've got an old router too...its a ticking time bombHombre_Lobo

can you just bypass the router and run an ethernet cable from the source instead (before the router)?

Sometimes the synch rate goes out of whack and becomes either too high or too low. At least thats what the comcast broad told me. Sounds like a bunch of malarkwy though.

Good to hear. The coax cable plugs into the router, so I don't think I could run an ethernet cable from the source instead.

your router didn't have a visa to work here. sorry dude.

They can die.
But your neighbor's seems to be in good health. Just use that one!

You might be able to flash the firmware and bring it back to life, but I don't really know what I'm talking about.

I'm naked with bob. He goes pretty well.

yeah they die all the time...
also if you're running DD-WRT if you're not on the latest version there are various worms and malware that targets those systems. flashing to a newer version usually fixes broken ones.

No lights at all? Sounds more like the primary coil in the power transformer was damaged. Unstable household current often surges, and the windings are a very small gauge. If you have one around the house of comparable voltage and amperage, you could try using it to see if that's the problem.
- from my experience it's the power supply about 1% of the time... and you need to match up tip, voltage and amps, so be careful :)BuddhaHat
- careful :)BuddhaHat
- Yup, you'd need a positive center lead, but if you have a matched transformer it's worth a try. ^5ZOOP
- But if it's already fucked, this won't hurt it at all =PZOOP

^it won't be that, it will be the growth of the neural net processor, a learning computer.

Cheap frickin' technology rears its ugly head - shelf life/usability is maybe a year, longer if you use it less... I'm running five computers through a cheap-ass SMC wireless/four port wired router, pretty much 24/7 and it has remarkably made it through 15 months... watch: it will crap out as soon as I finish typing...
