Finding myself listening to The Count Basie Orchestra this morning made me wonder if anybody else is into any really old music. Stuff from before Rock 'n' Roll?

Yeah, some great stuff from that era. I love some of the stuff on the original broadcast of War of the Worlds.

Its sad I know but I am ONLY able to listen to old stuff now. I have some kind of a block on anything new unless its fairly esoteric and intriguing sounding, like Demdyke Stare for example.
I'm all about old blues, old trad jazz, old trad folk, 70's pscychedic, Delta, Swamp, old pre-heavy rock. Can't even keep the radio on if Mumford & Sons, or Ladio gaga, or We Are Scientists come on. It just sounds so green and flimsy.

This brings up a question that might make for an interesting discussion. My mom's car has XM radio, and there's a section of individual channels with music from certain decades - 30s - 90s, each with their own channel.
We were using this and I got to wondering how far back actual music recordings go? There was obviously music in the 20s, but was there just not much recorded? I feel kind of dumb asking that being a musician and loving music, but it really made me think about why there wouldn't be a 20s or 10s channel. Shit music? None recorded?

- I did a paper on this back in college. not much before then cause it was hard to make the recordings.MikeColdFusion
- you wanted 50 copies, you had to play it live 50 times. also the format, wax cylinders, very hard to preserve.MikeColdFusion

Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag, over 100 years old and shows the fusion of classical works into what was contemporary music at the time. Elements of Dvorak's style are clearly a strong influence in this song.
