can you just use the pathfinder to combine it all?

My illustrator chops are pretty weak but I believe you can use the scripting functionality to do something like that if there's not an easier way. Just google illustrator scripts and see what pops up.

yeah, that's a tough one. depending on how you built it, you *may* be able to go select > same fill color... that would work if the background elements are a different fill color than the foreground objects. i assume that it's not built that way, though. you could also ungroup everything and select the foreground elements and then lock each item (apple + 2) and then just select the remaining elements and delete them. good times.

if the objects are in group, you can 'option click' to get to groups behind the ones in front, or you can click on the objects in the front and lock or hide them or even put them in a new layer, and delete what you dont see behind it, or you can goto preview mode and delete what you dont want..
you have a lot of choices..
- :) yes. I have many front objects. Hard to select it by hand.txyzinfo
- select 1 object in front then Select/ Same/ http://localhostr.co…e-pill
- then you can select in groups.
also you should use multiple layers and group like objects.e-pill - once the front is locked away just select all/ delete.. or even use the pathfinder n keep em..e-pill
- every object or group should have its own layer.. then group the layers and manage them.e-pill
- it doesn't works. because /select/same/.. select also backward objects tootxyzinfo

you can select object by colour and get rid of what you dont want..
which ever way you choose, it will be a lil time consuming and slightly frustrating, but it is doable..
is your work on separate layers? or all one 1? if its on 1 just lock or hide the front and get rid of the back..

Given the logical hoops an algortihm would have to jump through to achieve that, I suspect that is beyond Illy's innate capability

does your image use transparencies? what i mean, is the art that is not visible adding either tone or hue to the foreground image in any way? i ask because if you delete them and you are using transparencies, to give shadows or create form and you delete them, you will lose the colour or the hue in the front or it will change itself to look different.. again only asking if you are using transparencies.. carry on if otherwise..

start over? how on earth did you create so many covered objects in the first place? doesn't look too hard from what I can tell

define visible, what if the shape itself is not visible, but a bit of its shadow effect is

Perhaps try this plug in... (at the bottom of the page)
http://rj-graffix.com/software/p…- no Mac around 100 km.txyzinfo
- huh, you're not on a mac? that plug in is only for mac? shit.dopepope
- yes, I have Win. Requires Adobe Illustrator 5.0 through 8.0 on Macintoshtxyzinfo
- but, Macs are only toys! Who does work on a Mac? stupid designers... /smonospaced

When you say "3d -> vector. it's polygons" do you mean that you created this in a 3D application and exported as vector art? If so, there may be a setting in that application that allows you turn off exporting hidden objects, or to only export the visible (not render non-necessary polygons).
What's your workflow? Have you tried just starting in Illustrator?
- It's not a 3D software. It's Math software with Vector export. and now options to turn off exporting hidden objectstxyzinfo

i would assume it's all the shadow and glow effects making the Illustrator file heavy.
trimming out the crap behind without losing effects is never gonna happen.
just leave artwork as is or rasterize it.
