I had a similar problem not too long ago. I did the heat-gun trick, backed up my data and then part-exchanged it for a newer slim (I made sure the warranty sticker was all intact).
Felt a bit bad, but the place I part exchanged it with provides 12 month warranty to whoever buys it.
I guess it's a little late since you've already bought a new one thought... :)

This sounds like my worst nightmare

if you can get it fixed, do it, the 60gb model had no blocks on regions meaning you can play any versions ps3 game from any country on the 60gb model. this was changed when they created the 80gb model n discontinuing production on the 60gbs.
if you are to get a new one, they are better running machines, ultra quiet and are can do so much. but they can not play games from other regions dvd movies.. its wack!!

Can't you put your hard drive in a new ps3? If so your save games / trophies should be fine

I wonder if you can pull the hard drive out and back that up. I replaced my 60GB with a 250GB, I believe I just had to plug in a external drive to the front USB port and back it up before switching them out.
I think the old ones are valuable also because they're backward compatible. I guess that's good for hardcore gamers but I only played Fear Effect and REZ a few times and they look and play like crap considering PS3 native games.
I'm considering getting a slim since I'm usually just watching netflix on it these days and it's loud as hell.

So I went out and got a new one on Saturday – 320gb Slim. I like it. Signed in as an existing user and got all my trophy stuff back. Lost all my saved games (for now).
Fooler – that is a blindingly obvious yet brilliant idea ^ haha. Thanks.

Can you get a case for the old HD so you can connect it via USB to the new machine then copy all the save files to the relevant places on the new drive?
I upgraded my drive on my PS3 (old model) and I had to faff around doing this to transfer all my old files.

I got something like this for using my old HD externally and it worked with no problems:
