It's cheap but does it really make a difference.
I edit a lot of photos, usually only 12mp but I'll very often have a few open (sometimes more if I forget to close a bunch)
I'll have lightroom open at the same time too, with a fairly big library.
I've got an SSD already and other than upgrading my processor (which I can't afford at the moment) I think upgrading RAM is the cheapest way to improve performance.
Or is it?

beyond formatting / tidying / cleaning up your OS and software, buying RAM is usually the soundest cheap option.
Do it.

that and using external drives as scratch discs

I have 12 and still run out of ram with lightroom. especially after a large import.

Make sure you get it from here:

If you're on Windows*, you might buy oodles of RAM, then install software to allow you to set up a RAM drive (like back in the Amiga days *sniff*), that way you don't need worry about SSD rewrite number restrictions.
* I'm sure there's some Mac equivalent, I just don't speak Apple.
- er.. and then use your RAM drive as your primary swap.detritus

Spend the money on weed. Then you won't care if it goes slow.

What about a cluster of external floppy drives?

Does setting a RAM drive up really work?
I mean think of it like this, you start with 8GB and allocate 1GB for the RAM drive
So now you only have 7GB available. When that gets full, the system starts paging out to the RAM drive with the spare 1GB.
If the 8GB were available from the start, would the system not last longer without paging because there's already a whole extra gig to write to...

i dont see how more ram will truly help. but ram is cheap and you can give it a go. whats your process explorer stuff say when you have everything open. are you topping off on RAM? If so go for it. But if your not its likely disc/processor, whats the write times on the ssd? Seem slow when writing preview type files. Just go through the test runs and see where your hurting.
