Is Marketing... a dirty word to creatives like yourselves?
- Continuity0
Only if marketers (read: account minders and brand managers) start fancying themselves art directors. Otherwise, I couldn't give a toss about marketing.

Depends on who's minding the shop, and if they're smart....
I once freelanced at a place where everyone else called people in that department "the clowns in marketing" or TCIM for short...
I've also freelanced for places with "marketing" in their company name, some were smart, some were not... the word can mean almost anything....
Some idiots where I went to school tried to separate Design from "marketing" or "communication" so that their Design work was divorced from any concept of a message or target market...i.e. they were trying to be fine art, and they had tenure and trust funds, so they could get away with this sort of mindset....

Marketing as a discreet self-involved entity, yes.
Everything we do is marketing though, so no.

The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well the product or service fits him and sells itself. --peter drucker

The non-creative part of the marketing team is there to throw mud on what would otherwise be a clear message and clean design.
- vaxorcist0
Sometimes the "non-creative" part of the "marketing team" is actually good at powerpoint graphs and shit that somehow convinces clients to actually go along with our crazy creative ideas and let us do good stuff...
yes, this can be rare, but I look back positively on some of the 'non-creative' people who actually were good at this stuff.....

"Marketing is the tax you pay for being unremarkable." - Merlin Mann
That being said, most businesses are not remarkable, so better it be responsible, integrated marketing.

The only thing about the word marketing is when people say dumb shit like, "I'm a real team player—a marketeer." Pisses me off to no end.

I often encounter admin staff who consider themselves 'artful' and 'cool' and so moved into marketing. Hell, some of them even took a degree course in: "how to own designers and make them your bitch".

Running into this dilemma at my current gig. Nobody seems to be able to understand or delineate the nuances of the 'marketing team' and the 'creative team'. Myself included.
