For LCD monitors look for IPS panels, like the Dell UltraSharpTM U2711, the ips panels are going to in theory give you the best colors. Its not always listed what type of panel they are, which leads me to what to look for next...
1. View angles = 178 / 178 > good indication that its a better quality panel, do not settle for anything less.
2. Price = Better panels cost moar. The price jump will be obvious...I had a Samsung 305T for 2 years, seems to die about once a year, I am probably going to go the route of dell next time. I don't want to, it just doesn't feel sexy to have a dell monitor, not that the samsung was prettier, but at least I can call Dell up easier if I have issues.

What about NEC LCD EA232WMI? Any good or bad things?
What I can see, both HP and NEC seems to be chunky but I presume it is normal for monitors bigger that 20.1"
