ultimately unhelpful, yet tangentially relevant:
- I'm the owner of this site, Jetson Green. Certainly the Tron article won't be helpful to this question. Try viewing these pages:

I have always been curious about the permits and inspections process of these.
That, and I'm very curious about repairs. What if something just starts to leak or corrodes, do you buy a new metal side or what?

Would you be able to hook-up to the local sewer, water and electrical or would there be to much red tape? I guess it would depend on local by-laws...

My site, Jetson Green, was linked above with the Tron house. For better information, check these links:

I have been building container homes for 20 years.
Boy did I learn some lessons along the way - mistakes from stacking incorrectly to modifications to side walls to insulation.
For anyone interested in learning from my mistakes I have made a series of videos that cover the fundamentals and most often make mistakes.

Interesting idea, but like most prefab, the cost savings are not there.
As already noted, the savings that seem to be there just aren't realized by the time it is an inhabitable home.
Some people have done interesting things, though, from Wes Jones to Pugh+Scarpa to SHoP

I am glad you brought this up.
I am really interested in:
Mini homes

http://www.google.com/search?cli…All these materials range from wood, steel and concrete. Mudbrick also seems like a viable solution in the right climate.
The problem is whats the best approach? Find a plot of land out in BFE and build your own little home or develop small communities with shops, restaurants, businesses and modern simple urban outdoor living?
For $100,000 you could truly develop something self sustaining and inspiring. ($40,000 land $50,000 build $10,000 Misc and Permits)Shipping container homes
http://www.containerhome.info/I am not much on material but concrete seems good, including bamboo and plastic.
The have 'General Vallejo's mission' in Northern California that was built in the 1850's out of mud, grass and sand and its still standing today.
Its really a great time to revolutionize communities, commuting, working and providing in new forms of living and technological resources that are not being utilized.
A lot to be done and not much doing.

@bzsaw just had one of these dropped off at his house. He is making it into a workshop, i think. Hopefully he will chime in and let you know how he got it and all the details.
