Style is too subjective. And fashion has too many rules, most of those made up by ladies or the more flamboyant men.
Don't listen to them. Find your own rules.
But just in case here are mine:
1. Button your buttons (and add a tie) if you're seeing a client you're not yet on drinking terms with.
2. Unbutton all the other times, say at work or with friends, unless you're a stuckup, upthight, nogood bore of a human being.
