very practical - and so widely used canon have created a bit of a mini-industry.
it's either that or what, super 16, 35mm? = $$$
at work a huge amount of the tvc's are now shot solely with 5d's.

Even though i shoot with DSLRs on almost daily basis (including some high end commercials) i gotta say it did create a cottage industry catering to clueless amateurs when it come to gear.

what are you shooting? Do you have control over timing and environment? Can you ask people to do things again and again?
I've shot a couple of music videos on 5D mark II as well as some clips for web ads, it's great as long as you control the situation. the Marshal monitor made focussing much easier. If you've ever shot a Bolex, you'll find DSLR video seems closer to a Bolex than to a normal "camcorder"
Documentary style Run and Gun events? A 5D mark II would be not so fun for that...

Any editors have a favorite way to deal with the Rolling Shutter in post? or am I right in just being very restricted in my 5D's camera movements?

Pulling focus for me on a 5d has been MUCH easier with old, metal slow-turn manual focus lenses from 20 years ago... the Nikon 28mm F2.8 AI + adapter, the Pentax Takumar 50mm 1.4 with adapter,etc...
These old lenses turn more predictably and slowly, often with more turn/per/distance and I can use gaffer tape marks for start and end of a focus pull just like i used to do in film school, whereas the Canon EF lenses don't work like that....

Do you record sound separately through a field mixer/amp? Is the sound less dynamic through the cam's 3.5mm input?

Less about gear and more about production, concept and direction. Buy only gear you need for your shoots instead of trying to keep up with Jones's. I shoot spec commercials and usually get by with a slider, tripod, lenses and lights. Also use external sound for recording audio. I don't need a cage, follow focus or shoulder rig, but everyone usually thinks they do.

Meh. I shoot on a T2i.
All you need is a good shoulder rig, follow focus and an LCD loope.
