I have been asked to help a new client come up with a name for their company. I was curious how many hours to estimate for this type of service or if anyone has done this before and knows first hand how to calculate the hours.

oh man. that is a tough one. i would ask their budget because it could be a long process. think about all the names you'll come up with and then the work to see if they already exist and stuff like that.
- ya I'm hesitant to do it because I know it can be quite a process. I don't think they would want to pay for the amount of hours it would actually take.jedi12

you're also at a very good vantage point of helping create both a name and a graphic that work well together, instead of most people who have to match one to the other.

that's gonna cost them! I mean it's not just the name you need to think up it's the whole entire brand! I think a meeting to discuss budgets and also explain the process with them first and then see what they say, but I agree with cspn_ron it's a tough one!

Do it for free, or are you a racist?

we do this for movie titles pretty often. just brainstorm a bigass list until you can't squeeze out any more ideas, pdf it and bill for as many hours as it actually took you to do it. no need to show logo treatments unless they specifically asked for it

15 minutes. Round up to an hour.
Bill it and kill it. NEXT.

Having done both naming and the accompanying identity development I can say the naming part can be far more arduous than the actual identity development. Name generation can be quite tedious depending on the level of research and strategy you perform. You'll also have to take into consideration rounds of naming for legal purposes - running it past a lawyer or legal counsel to make sure it's available. All in all it can easily be a 40+ hour project for naming alone.
Someone mentioned checking to see what kind of budget they have - which may inform how many hours you spend on that part of the process. I would bill hourly if it is not something you are intimately familiar with.

We generally do an hourly approach to this type of project with rounds of names and reasoning behind some of them. Here's how our last naming project went:
Initial research and brainstorming: 6hrs
Round 2, refined brainstorming based on initial feedback: 8hrs
Round 3, refinement and reasoning behind the name: 8hrs- Stupid, name is super important, i let it grow on me for monthsdrgs
