First of all, "better" is rather subjective...
But, is their architecture better... I feel yes.
Industrial design better... I feel so.
Fashion... obviously, hell yes.
Graphic design... I'd say so.Switzerland is a very small, small country for starters. Their culture is all about being clean, and organized, timely...
If people believe that cultural differences create the same person then they've never traveled... and worked with people of other cultures.
I think it's ok to have an opinion on what's "better" based on what you like, but I don't think anyone can dispute the fact that people are shaped by their culture, environment and education... I mean nobody can argue that their best work was when they first learned how to design... at least I hope.

I think culture has a large part to do with it - business in the US does not embrace design/art in the same way most European countries do. Meaning that most companies in the US view graphic design services as a line-item on an invoice and not an integral part of their business strategy whereas in EU there is a very pervasive culture of art+design which is injected into many facets of society, least of which is business.

i went to school out in the midwest for a couple years, then transferred to nz to finish out. I know it's not Europe, but a big difference I noticed on US education was that it was focused more on moving people thru the system and showing what others have done as opposed to the nz school experience, which was much more about pushing people to explore their talents and cultivating what they they do well.

You just don't know about the shitty ones because they're in a different country and not cool enough for their influence to reach you...

Europe definetly has better fashion.

I think you guys are taking his question/statement too literally. I get the point, and in part agree. There's a reason why clients and marketing idiots always mention european brands and design... and Apple's website of course.

Swiss miss comments on growing up in Switzerland in one her presentations.
She talks about how good design is everywhere, gives examples of milk cartons exhibiting excellent layout and balance, bin bags having helvetica on them etc
they have artists on money. It's a culture where design and art is taken more seriously (ought oh I feel a ken Robinson talk coming on). Clean, minimal, function culture will naturally effect individuals in their capacity to produce visual work. Being able to think more freely/creatively in a cleaner environment is generally an appected truth.
So in short, yes, becuase the culture facilitates an environment more beneficial to design and visual works.
