I need suggestions, not knowing anything abut windows machines.
I need a laptop capable of running Photoshop / D.weaver / Indesign / Lightroom. The smaller / lighter the better really as it will pretty much be a remote, synced version of a desktop which I also need.
Desktop is to be more powerful and all main editing of images, not much film, web / layout etc will be done here.
Dell for both? Toshiba 13" laptops look decent but as I say, no idea, so help is needed!

Dell or Lenovo

£400 is a decent price bracket.
You can get i5 laptops with 4gb, thats a pretty beastly machine really, even capable of 3D and video editing.
Check out hotukdeals, like this -
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/…just search 'i5 laptop' or 'i7 laptop' etc.
Stick to i3/i5/i7 based laptops if you don't have a comprehensive knowledge of laptop processors. The i3/i5/i7 are all good, the higher the number the better. Laptops are the worst for confusing slogans, with just tits and tinsel, but no decent hardware.
I've seen i7 4gb ram laptops for £480.

blimey, cameras and computers. Nice. Thanks for that. At present I have a 17" i7 500gb 8gb MBP. I'm selling up probably and getting desk and laptops with the sale funds!
Any brands to look out for for good / bad? I hear HP are bad.

HPs are alright. They don't include the crapware like they used to. Toshiba has gone down hill in years and never really come back to the premium laptop brand they used to be. Lenovo is good. Not a fan of Sony.
- yeah, I wouldn't touch a toshiba with a stick these days,
really went from high to fuckn lowgeorgesIII

^yeh i geek it up on all fronts!
just putting together a new desktop machine and recently researched the hardware.Selling a 17" macbook pro? you could buy a car as well as a desktop and laptop machine! (that's actually true, not even a joke!)
Brands?
its a tough one, actually i hear HP are very good (typing on one know and it seems solid enough). Toshiba seem decent. Im not 100% on brands tbh, but check out some reviews.Be sure to go for an i5 2500k Sandy bridge desktop though. There has been some trouble recently about SATA port deterioration on the motherboards (not 100% sure, google it for more info), but i wouldnt worry, it only effects less than 5% of all systems. im not worried and im still getting one.

ETM reminded me
mybro has a sony viao, and i think they are one of the premium laptop brand these days, very well made.

Try if you can to get a machine with a video card where the video ram is NOT shared with the main RAM...
4 Gigs of RAM is a major help with Windows7, I love my used Dell... the Latitude office models have less crapware than the consumer models.
Crapware (apps you do NOT want, but there to make money for the vendor) sucks... hugely messy.... it can slow down a windows machine and may be hard to delete completely... I got a clean Windows 7 install from an IT geek friend...

always been under the impression lenovo are great quality, but with a extra price premium. Just surf it up on newegg and google reviews. Go by the hardware spec and price. I wouldnt count out toshiba/acer/msi/asus.... so many models even if one or two machines get bad reviews it doesnt mean too much when theyre putting out so many models. Usually just a hiccup. As far as dell, hp, gateway, sony, never been too big of a fan, jsut never gave me a good impression of good hardware. Made me think they were hiding behind the brand.

Thanks for this.
What about daily stuff like time machine? Is there a pc backup equivalent? Tm allows you to access and restore single files without restoring the whole lot.

@Hombre_Lobo so i5 / i7...There are loads of different versions of each.

How are these for example?
Is it easy to add ram like it is with macs?
I'm after a 15" light as possible.

suggestions?

@kinson. Not sure with that specific model but most PC laptops are very easy to upgrade RAM/HD and other parts. HD/Optical Drive/RAM tend to all be removable without opening it up properly.

I have honestly been thinking about getting one of these:
It costs basically as much as a 17" mbp, but it's 18.4" and is far more powerful, notably room for 16gb of ram, a 2gb video card & multiple harddrives. It also weights about 6kg and was designed by bang & ofulsen. Strangely it also has 2 touchpads, one for each hand! Essentially a desktop replacement.
- If it's a desktop replacement, why not just get a desktop? I read this a wee while back.. http://www.reghardwa…detritus

Hm, portability is important though, I guess you could stick wheels on it. Nice design though, a little B&O early nineties style?
