    ^yeh i geek it up on all fronts!
    just putting together a new desktop machine and recently researched the hardware.

    Selling a 17" macbook pro? you could buy a car as well as a desktop and laptop machine! (that's actually true, not even a joke!)

    Brands?
    its a tough one, actually i hear HP are very good (typing on one know and it seems solid enough). Toshiba seem decent. Im not 100% on brands tbh, but check out some reviews.

    Be sure to go for an i5 2500k Sandy bridge desktop though. There has been some trouble recently about SATA port deterioration on the motherboards (not 100% sure, google it for more info), but i wouldnt worry, it only effects less than 5% of all systems. im not worried and im still getting one.
