Well, sort of.
I found an interesting job post on craigslist last night and sent an email.
This morning my boss comes up to me... "Hey dude, looking for a job?"
Talk about fucking awkward.

my AD years ago did the same thing. he ended up getting a raise.

Is it the exact same job? If it's a slightly higher position you could just claim that you're looking to move up the ranks.

you can't get fired for looking for another job so if you do, sue him and you'll make loads of money plus you'll have loads of time to find a new job.
- herzo0
^^^ you can get fired for anything in an work at will state. they dont have to give you a reason. the only thing protected are legal discrimination classes like race, religion and age.
- fadein110
haha - this is quite common in the public sector when cuts are being made - you have to re-apply for your own job - most confusing/annoying...

We really need some more information on how this went down.
WTF did you say back to your boss???
What's the deal? Are you being let go and didn't know it?
- scrap_paper0
It is totally natural to be trolling for another gig. If it gets brought up just talk with your boss and say "Yeah I'm just seeing what the market is like". You could use the conversation as leverage to get more out of your current job if you play your cards right.

Is your boss under the impression that he is in charge of your career path and goals? How often do people get raises or promotions without asking for them?
