Now as someone who isn't a design professional and just has a passing interest in the whole thing, I wish Adobe CC was as easy to 'acquire' (nudge nudge wink wink)
As it was on Windows. It's easy to get, perhaps not quite as easy to get working on a more 'permanent basis' (nudge nudge wink wink)

Do hackintoshes fare well with Software Updates?
- its irrelevantfadein11
- how is that irrelevant?monospaced
- this method installs 10.6.5
updating to 10.6.6 sounds like it's having a lot of success so far, some have issues.johnny_wobble

Dealing with hackintosh setups it's not worth the hassle in my opinion, some shit won't work properly or you have to be hunting for stuff online to make it work.
If you build such a beast of PC put Windows 7 and get some real work done.
- I MIGHT agree if there was any real work getting done on it.johnny_wobble
- but I'd spring for a real mac, not windows 7, if I was doing work on it.johnny_wobble

- Do you plan on running multiple vid cards? Just wondering why you wouldn't go with a Sandybridge processor?ETM
- I guess the 970 would be superior for video, which I assume you'd also be doing.ETM
- nice man. which install method are you going to do?johnny_wobble
- no real reason other than i thought i'd spring for a six-core. there will be some video, yesscarabin
- iboot+multibeast look the cleanest to me, gonna go with thatscarabin
- right on. that's what i used and it's ran fine. on it right now.johnny_wobble
- have you upgraded to lion? i'm curious about how that will affect things...scarabin
- no. i'm still on 10.6.5
just haven't bothered, but updates get worked out pretty quickly.johnny_wobble - guess i should update though. maybe not to lion yet, but all the 10.6. updates.johnny_wobble

@tymeframe
"how much work & effort goes into setting up something like that?"well first you have to do adequately put together a computer, which can be very daunting, but its quite easy.
The harder part i imagine is getting MAC OSX installed on your system, which from what ive read isnt that difficult as long as you're prepared for somethings not to work right away and spend some time trouble shooting them to get them working.
I expecting installing a hacked OSX would take a maximum 2 days, including all the problems you could face. which to most is worth the money saved as well as the better hardware available for a higher performance machine.
ask johnny wobble how long it took!

i just added this thing, which reads all major memory card types so i don't have to fuck with camera cables
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product…
you can use this thing to make it fit into a normal drive bay

Id suggest posting this on the hackintosh forums before buying it, they can tell you which motherboards are problematic.
The main issues with hackintosh being wireless and audio, but i think most desktops are fine.
- Funny, I've only ever had issues with my GPU! If it weren't for that, I'd be running a hackintosh now.kalkal
- ATI HD 4850kalkal
- Well, actually I've got all AMD stuff now which is even worse :Pkalkal
- really?
that sucks dude. Did you want to game on the mac?Hombre_Lobo - ha, what AMD set up you got? x4? x6 maybe??
Hombre_Lobo - phenom x2 555 BE OC'd to 3.6ghz. Couldn't unlock the extra cores :/ still does it's jobkalkal
- Not bothered about gaming, but none of the UI is accelerated with out GPU thus openCL and quartzkalkal
- all parts have been researchedjohnny_wobble
- johnny wobble = machine?
lol at that cold reply! :DHombre_Lobo - :) hehe. just sayin' I checked all the parts for compatibility.johnny_wobble
- cool dude! enjoy! :DHombre_Lobo

use this thing to add more USB ports inside. put your wireless keyboard and mouse dongles in it so you're not using up external USB ports
- nb0
I'm seriously considering building one for video editing. I don't do a ton of work but I'm working with a Macbook Pro right now and running everything off of external USB drives is slow and painful. I'd love a Mac Pro, but I can't justify the cost. It seems more economical to build a hackintosh and constantly upgrade SSDs, RAM, processor, rather than dropping $4000+ on a new Mac Pro every few years.
- mine's still running strong. no real issues. never messed with the sleep thing...johnny_wobble
- Migrate your work to firewire 800 drives.. you will be amazedThelonious_Funk
- As good as internal SSDs?nb
- I also like the idea of upgrading to Thunderbolt as it becomes more available.nb
- Hmmm.... MBP+ThunderboltSSD vs. Hackintosh+SSD. Hmmm.nb
- yeah usb is slow as hell. firewire 800. well, SSD is the fastest but also very pricy.akrok

@pixter
popular laptops like the XPS have loads of guilds online, I'd be surprised if you didnt get it working the first time round.

Just finished putting OSX on my HP Touchsmart TX2 -> AMD run with multitouch screen.
I used iDeneb and had a bit of a struggle compared to my missus' Inspiron 1525 (iPC) but I now have a touchscreen Hackintosh. No multitouch yet but it's neat. I still prefer 7 though.

nice looking spec.
gigabyte motherboards are solid and as a company they are pretty good. that mobo seems a bit expensive, but maybe thats the currency difference (im in the UK).
The I3 is a decent chip, pretty underrated and it can overclock (like the i series chips, very well.
Saying that i would have paid the difference and got an i5 760 - its the best value for money chip, i dont think it costs much more than that i3 and is an excellent performer. But if you dont need the extra performance no worries :)
Enjoy your getting your favorite OS at a decent price! :)
HURRAH!!!!!
- fuck my grammar! lolHombre_Lobo
- i5-760 is $205 vs i3-540 for $115johnny_wobble
- YOU COLD MOTHER!
that is a fair bit cheaper! righto chappy! :DHombre_Lobo
- orrinward0
I just did a Hackintosh build on a second hand Inspiron 1525 Laptop that cost < £200 using Kalyhaly's method.
Less than 200 quid for a 2.4GHz Dual Core, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD laptop running Snow Leopard aint bad.
It's for my missus and so far after 3 days everything has worked smoothly with no bugs. I added the Kexts to the boot disk before installing and didn't have to update anything after the install.
Everything worked out of the box and it handles PSCS5 fine.

@scarabin
v nice setup, but why the i7 970? the i5-2500k is a lot cheaper and overall about the same performance. The i7 970 is a chunk better in 3d though. But for photoshop (which i think you done more than anything else), there is 1% improvement for i7 970.
The only major benefit of the i7 970 over the 2500k is in 3d performance, where its about 15-25% better.
If you've already got all the parts and the money isnt an issue, its no problem, its a crazy good cpu.
sweet set up dude!
Ive got a (what would be considered old) 'amd Phenom II X4 955 be' quad core, overclocked slightly and its a beast.Your new cpu is like 20-30% better than mine and overclocks crazy good, plus with that h60 the overclocking will be schweeeet. ENJOY!
Also you aint got an SSD? your system needs one dude!
- I chose the processor because it came highly recommended to me and I got a deal on it. And hell yes I got an SSD :)scarabin
- Check my parts list abovescarabin
- oops completely missed the ssd, i was scanning for 'ssd' :P
deal? Niiiiiice!!!Hombre_Lobo
