Has anyone ever been? Thinking about visiting there with the idea of possibly buying some real estate. Looks like a nice area with great prices.

Oh wow, I just noticed you live in Mexico! Have you been to La Paz? I spent a few weeks in San Jose del Cabo a few months ago and I really liked the Baja California Sur province, mind you San Jose del Cabo was a bit more touristy than I'd like. I'm wondering how La Paz differs and how a gringo like myself would fit in there.
- BTW, what is Culiacan like? Is there much of design industry there?CuriousGeorge
- never been to Lapaz but when i lived state side I was big into scuba, they always talked aboutmoldero
- La Paz and the great wreck dives there, I aksed about La Paz a few weeks ago to friends here and they said not much tourists there like Cabomoldero
- in La Paz unlike Cabomoldero
- In Cul i rarely meet tourists and when I do their canadian, its nice thoughmoldero
- when i drive to Mazatlan, very touristy seems more people will hit you up for $$ and the cops will harrass you more thinking all gringos are made of $$moldero
- gringos are made of $$, I like Cul because im the only gringo I know, and cops dont harrass you like they would inmoldero
- a tourist town, but even when they do bust your chops, give them $50 pesos, its like $4 bux and their happymoldero
- its hillariousmoldero
- but non tourist town like Cul, ive been here for 3 years, hardly speak spanish and i get along finemoldero
- super mellow down here, had to get away from the crazy agency/mortgage lifemoldero
- and renting a house down here, big house in a good neighborhood is super cheapmoldero
- i came from SF so the cost of living down here i was like WOHOO!moldero
- oh and hardly any design here in Culiacan, theres 1 agency that I know of.moldero
- Wow! Are you living the retired life there? Not working at all? Sounds like you are living the life!CuriousGeorge
- was kinda for a while but now my funds are getting to where i need to start working for $$ againmoldero
- I've been doing stuff down here for free for fun and learning, but yeah, time to start making $$ againmoldero
- Is the ability to design and make enough money to live possible where you are?CuriousGeorge
- i guess ill find out, lol, im hoping i can freelance for stateside clients againmoldero
- average pay down here is pretty tightmoldero
- friend of mine just did 3 tv commercials for $4000 pesos, i was like WTF thats not even $350 USmoldero
- but hes young, like 24, i guess he needed the portfoliomoldero
- $350!?!? That's nuts. What does it cost you to live per month if you don't mind me asking?CuriousGeorge
- my rent is $10,000 pesos, like $900.00 us but its a big 3 bedroom house, 2 car garagemoldero
- nice neighborhood, gas and water is dirt cheap and power is cheap in the wintermoldero
- but running your AC's in the entire house can run me up to 300 us some timesmoldero
- i had to adapt and only run the AC in the room i was inmoldero
- + gas isnt like in the states, we have tanks here, so that could suck when your cooking and you run out of gasmoldero
- Wow, how about telco utilities like cell phone and internet? I've heard that can be really expensive in Mexico.CuriousGeorge
- calling your english speaking friends to call the gas company to bring you more gas lolmoldero
- skype, lol, yeah cell phones rates are kinda high here toomoldero
- and trying to buy electronics down here forget about it, buy all that stuff in the statesmoldero
- electronic prices are insane down here, but food is cheapmoldero
- sucks they dont have much organic food stores here eithermoldero
- Awesome, thanks for all the info! You've been a huge help.CuriousGeorge
- i still to this very day trip out to the fact that i live heremoldero
- no problem brada :)moldero

La Paz is very diff than Cabo. Only a couple streets full of vendors, food is really good (more targeted towards locals than tourists). City is quite safe and can be driven with or without traffic in about 30 minutes.
Definitely feels more like a Mexican large town than a tourist spot. The "Malecon" (Strip) is fun at night with clubs and bars but not the spring break atmosphere, more tradicional. Some hardcore scuba divers year round too.***READ THIS THOUGH***
It's common knowledge in Baja that La Paz and the surrounding communities are the 'Narco Drug Lord's Paradise'. Which is to say, it's a refuge, a kind of a neutral zone. They don't start shit with each other there. They have their fun and try and keep the peace in these communities. If you have the money to buy property in any of these 'high-end' neighborhoods, keep your fuckin' nose out of people's business and you'll be fine.

I definitely need to visit before I buy. I'm guess I'm just getting more serious about buying a place in Mexico. I've been visiting different parts 2-3 times a year for the past decade and I just love the culture, food.
I'll be honest, the drug lord part freaks me out a bit. Are there any other areas you would suggest that have a mellow vibe that isn't too touristy, ex-pats would be great.
- In Baja or anywhere is Mexico?HijoDMaite
- Anywhere. I've spent time in Baja, Pacific Coast, Yucatan, loved every place. I've heard Oaxaca is amazing but no ocean right?CuriousGeorge
- right?CuriousGeorge
- Oaxaca is for old people, photographers and Food Network stars.HijoDMaite
- LOL!CuriousGeorge
- moldero0
"keep your fuckin' nose out of people's business and you'll be fine."
yup
- I tend to keep to myself but I do like meeting people with similar interests. I'm not a drug lord so I should be fine. ; )CuriousGeorge
- moldero0
when I first came down to Culiacan they were in the beginning of that drug war, ill just say it was fucking insane.
- just dont look like a narco, dont mean mug anyone with a nice truck and youll be finemoldero
- "mean mug" = "mad dog"?
then YES!HijoDMaite

Red = Gulf Cartel Territory (eradic, unpredictable newer younger members) very little American presence. You will stand out like a sore thumb and these areas are not as beautiful.
Purple = Sinaloa cartel (where our boy Moldero lives) this is a more established old school cartel. A lot of American ex-pats who are smart enough to keep to themselves at all times.
Yellow = Territory in dispute, don't even think about moving here!! It's where all the scary stories that you have read about are happening. If you look closely, you will see they are the main sections where drugs come in to the country and then are distributed to the good old U.S. of A.
(except Mexico City is safe in that aspect, but you have other shit to worry about, like lots of petty crime and 10 million people in one city)
- en desputa = crazynessmoldero
- What about that tiny white spot between PV and Zihuatanejo?
; )CuriousGeorge - I had no idea that the Yucatan is rated so badly for cartel!CuriousGeorge
- It's not really, this map doesn't really mean its all violent. You have to remember a lot of the areas are almost inhabitable. As in no Amenities.
HijoDMaite - as in no amenities.HijoDMaite
- Good point.CuriousGeorge
- White spot? Good question I think that might just be a treacherous tropical mountain range.HijoDMaite

OK, sounds like I need to check out La Paz further. I'm thinking about a trip there in the next couple of months to experience it first hand. Can't wait. I was looking into flights and it looks like Alaska/Horizon and Aeromexico fly directly into La Paz.
Thanks for all of the info!
