imo the way is see it, and without going into the minutiae, if we all lived happily like it was on 'little house on the prairie' then the world would be relatively unscathed, the fact is we don't in sooo many ways that this was bound to happen eventually. and it will probably get worse in the future.

I would imagine that large groups of animals die all the time - every day and somehow this has blown out of proportion and people are linking them all together into some falsely abnormal story.
