According to the Guardian, it was harmonic resonance between extremely-low-frequency (ELF) transmissions from the Navy facility in Clam Lake, Wisconsin and an undersea earthquake in the Gulf of Mexico. The resonance front was 200 miles long and approximately 4 miles wide at its peak, extended through the south-central US, and lasted for two days, peaking yesterday. They say that the resonance wouldn't have affected anything biological except that lightning strikes in the peak regions ionized the air, and the resulting 30Hz shockwaves of course ruptured the cranial nerves that are dedicated to 3d navigation - hence, small birds and fish.
