This the Google Insights for Search report on the terms "graphic design" and "web design" (web design is in red). I thought it'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on this.
What's the deal with pattern of popularity? Popularity drops sharply in December and peaks in January or February.
Also, why is popularity decreasing?

Start and end of school?
Over saturation of the industry.
Some people don't realize design is actual work.

Popularity is decreasing because of the degree of difficulty in learning code, I presume. You see in 2004 Print Design was strong. Now its almost all digital. A mix of digital designers and print designers.
If they want a print designer, he needs to have some web.
If they want a web designer he needs to have some print.
With all the phones, apps, programming, development I think only those with the passion stay in.

It's still a little unsettling (just a little) that popularity is decreasing so rapidly.
Maybe desktop publishing applications are taking our jobs?
- Even if this is the case, there doesn't seem to be a shortage of design jobs...neatstreet
- No. In 2004 loans were handed out like candy. Not so much anymore. No worries.VikingKingEleven

it is because degree of difficulty is going up Neat.
That is a Great sign. The industry was oversatured. I truly love what I do, when I get to do it right.
- not a lot of people can say that.VikingKingEleven
- definitely over saturatedDodecahedron

If there is anything to take away from this its....
Learn some sort of digital language pronto. Web, motion, TV along with Print.

it's just the economy. less clients looking for design. less people interested in entering the design field.
- I'm not saying that it will bounce back though.randommail

So what you guys are saying is that it is harder now than when all the sudden the oldschool chaps had to drop DPIs and learn to measure in pixels in 1998 let's say?
...mhhhh
Or are you saying that people with no technical knowledge cannot play in the field? I wonder what most of the CD in the big fat agencies can tell about a line of code... the ones I met, barely nothing.

Ok, so the mini dips you see each year are just the normal drop-off in searches over the christmas period. They'll be there for whatever term you search, for example here is the insight for the term "Lawyer" – same xmas dips.
The overall decreasing trend is nothing to do with coding getting harder (what a conceited thought!). If you bothered to read what the graph was measuring you'd see this:
"The numbers on the graph reflect the number of searches that have been done for a particular term, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. They don't represent absolute search volume numbers"
So, as you can imagine, since 2004 there has been a massive increase in google searches. Since the graph shows the number of searches for a term relative to all total searches, you would expect to see the graph in decline as total searches increase.
So if (for example) the ratio of searches for Graphic Design vs Total Searches were 1:1,000,000 in 2004, and 1:2,000,000 in 2010 then you would see plots on the graph descending between those times (as you do)
