15 years. Best way to quit, start dipping; then spend months craving dip more than you ever craved a smoke...
- 14 years here... started riding my bike when my first daugther was born, the result was the sameOBBTKN
- I started running shortly after.mstocks

3 years stopped after 22+yrs smoking. Cut down, did nico-gum when cravings were bad (e.g drinking/socialising... for few months then just stopped.
Most of the time the smell disgusts me but sometimes (particularly cold winter days) when you get a waft I think "mmmm". But would never start again.
Think the worst is walking past someone who's smoking green. That's a smell I'll always love.I'd tried stopping in the past but never had a real reason to stop so always failed - actually to be honest, I never even really tried that hard.
It helps to have a reason. Some others have posted it's when kids came along. My reason was my wife. She wasn't anti-smoking but didn't like the smell on me so before we got married I was completely stopped. Something I wanted to do for her. It's a habit I wish i'd never started in the first place but hey-ho.
When I see kids smoking these days I really want to go up and suggest to them to stop and that they'd regret getting hooked in the future. But then I think as to how I'd have reacted when I was that age and someone twice my age came up to me to tell me that - I'd have told them to fuck off and mind their own business.
Haha!

Respect to all of you who have given up. I'm a fair weather smoker, only have a ciggie if I've got a pint in my hand. I think about giving up, and probably should. I'm 40 next year (WTF), if it doesn't happen then it never will.
As far as e-cigarettes go, biggest problem I've found with those is you can't dip them in crack.

Back to smoking, full of stress and zero exercise, plan to start riding strong this easter and cut down the beers with friends... Hope it works, body in very bad shape and feared for a pain in the back and right arm.
Stupid me, but overworking was not a good thing ever, unbalances all my life...
Quiters, keep it strong!

No alcohol for nearly 25 years, no nicotine for nearly 10 years. I just had a big bowl of ice cream, followed by a piece of key lime pie. It seems obvious what I should quit next.
Quitting smoking was a real big life change, and a big pain in the ass to get over the addiction. I don't ever want to do that again.

One month and ten days without smoking. Two close friends have also left after me.
I stopped coughing a long time ago, every day I breathe better and I have more energy.
This weekend I'm going back to the roller and maybe I'll take a bike ride for a couple of hours, it's cold, but the roads and nearby forests are beautiful these sunny winter days.
Cheer up quitters!!
- good for you!milfhunter

The day after we got the positive pregnancy test I had my last cigarette. That was 11 years ago last Nov. It actually just hit me last week that I think I've been an ex-smoker longer than I was a smoker. Now when I smell cigarettes it makes me ill.
Good job OBBTKN!!
- Well done! We both, wife and me, were smokers until our first, and now the older, daugther born. Wife does'nt smoke yet, but I started again a few years ago...OBBTKN
- I didn't smoke too much either, six cigs a day at the most, but finally I think "I've completely disgusted myself with that vice".OBBTKN
- It's a hard thing to quit. I failed a few times before it stuck. You just have to be 100% ready for it in order to make it as far as you have. Huge thumbs up.mathinc

11 years gone here too after smoking for 16. Just had to remind myself that I actually wanted to quit.
I hear everyone has at least one addiction, whether it's something that's good for you, or something that isn't...
