This is something that I've always wanted to "learn", but it seems either you get it or you don't, it's right or it's wrong, etc.
This seems good:

But not so comprehensive... links, tips and guides please!

Nice! I would love some new links or tips also ;)
for now, the only rule I live by and keep telling myself when I do something is... 'don't kern like a whore!'

I would love some kerning tips as well.

i was told to imagine tennis balls between each letter. and in between each letter, there should be a good equal balance of them.
- 65mm between each letter? Not sure how useful a tip that is for body copy...detritus

A bit too much space between W and A, or is it just me?

Artists have done this for ever to check composition, that's all she's doing. Works in a mirror too.

Turn away from your computer, look out and focus on something stationery, bland and mute. Blink a few times, shake your head, forget everything you were just looking at.. 15 seconds later — look back at screen and see your piece anew.
Do this every once in a while.

turning the type upside down, that way you don’t read the word, you merely look at the shapes the characters make and the space that’s created between them.

I like to imagine a "volume" of the space between in letter and try to make those balance. With this in mind, you will find that these general concepts of kerning are useful.
1. Two adjacent verticals, such as ll or Hk, need the most amount of space between them.
2. Round shapes beside a vertical need a little less. Examples include lo or Ho. You're starting to get the idea.
3. Round shapes next to other round shapes need the least amount of space. Obviously this means combinations like Oo, pd, and so on.
4. Special situations exist where you have to really get in there and fix things. Someone pointed out 2011, specifically 11, as one such case. Others include LT and, well, you get the point.
